The article wants people to assume the children were more or less bought. Paying medical and certain other legit expenses of the birth mother is normal in adoption proceedings. I’d be more interested in knowing whether the infants were screened for FAS.
Yeah, FAS was also my first thought. He kinda has “the look,” too.
An Ex-SIL did something similar. She adopted two little girls from a drug-addled, ‘mother.’
Those kids are nutty. Seriously so. :(
$50k for a private adoption is rather above market rate for a clean transaction, even today. Close to 20 years ago, it isn’t quite passing the smell test. The $15k for the second child seems below market except for a state agency transaction. And if you are paying expenses, there shouldn’t be a volume discount.

$50,000 is normal?
It is a shame but these children are generally damaged goods and the root of a life time of heartache for anyone who tries to help them. I have seen it too many times and have never known of a single situation where someone who has taken pity on a child of horrible circumstances that does not get the very short end of the stick. As a first hand witness to the outcomes I have seen ZERO for Four. One took a long time of struggles but finally ended in tragedy. The other three just took a lot less time.
In these cases, when it comes to a question of nature vs. nurture, nature wins. You can’t beat chemical’s in vivo damage or genetics. At least I’ve never seen it turn out well though I’m guessing someone has but not often.

BEST YOU WOULD have read the article before opining on what the article wants us to assume ...
And $50,000 is actually not that bad. $100,000.00 was more in line with what it used to be and that was 15 years ago.
I adopted a baby promptly from the birth mother’s womb, directly from the delivery room, straight from the box, and we didn’t pay the birth mother sh|t!
The mom was a druggy. My child is way better off.
Being born addicted to meth and crack is worse than alcohol. That brain was born fried.
