BREAKING: Democratic rebuttal to GOP House Intelligence memo released
washingtonexaminer.com ^ | Daniel Chaitin

Posted on 02/24/2018 1:15:07 PM PST by RoosterRedux

The Democratic rebuttal memo to the Republican House Intelligence Committee memo on alleged government surveillance abuses was released Saturday afternoon.

House Intelligence Committee Chairman Devin Nunes, R-Calif., acknowledged its release at his appearance at the Conservative Political Action Conference, at about 4 p.m.

"It's just posted," he told American Conservative Union chairman Matt Schlapp, quipping that the committee website was probably already crashing due to high traffic.

Democrats say their memo was written as a rebuttal to provide greater context to a Republican memo that was released earlier this month, which outlines abuses by the FBI and the Justice Department against the Trump campaign.

Although the Republican-led House Intelligence Committee voted to make the Democrat’s memo public earlier this month, President Trump refused to declassify it, citing "significant concerns for the national security and law enforcement interests."

I’m serious in suspecting indictments next week for the FAB Five.

The FAB Five hearings were cancelled five weeks ago, the day before they were scheduled to appear before Nunes’ committee because the IG was still milking information from them. A post from Conservative Treehouse wrote that the DOJ IG is duty bound and MUST immediately report evidence of felonies to the AAG or the Attorney General Jeff Sessions. There is no need for a special prosecutor because the evidence is already gathered.

Conservative Treehouse suspects that Sessions immediately referred the evidence to a Grand Jury. The Saturday PM release of Schiff baloney is a weak and desperate deflection to what is coming next week.

My two cents.

Do believe they chose Tarlov to represent the left because she has a completely intolerable voice. Needs Adnoid surgery and a voice coach both

Does “triggered” mean the one and only reason???

“In early July 2016, Steele — described by Montoya as a “proven,” “well-regarded” and “known entity” in the intelligence community – approached an FBI associate with a worrisome tale: ...

The allegations Steele laid out to the FBI in July 2016 in the dossier were shocking. They were salacious. And they were completely unverified by the U.S. government — at least at that point.”

-- Stop posting like you are some sort of arbiter of what government can and can't do. The only check on Congress is the Constitution. Appointing independent counsels including SPs is not unconstitutional. They can do it. --

Nice strawman, although I do take your point. I was referring the SC, which is the current mechanism and title for some sort of entity approximately independent of the usual executive department oversight.

Cutting against your proposed action that Congress should take, Congress is not very keen on the Independent Counsel law that enabled, e.g., Ken Starr. Not that it couldn't in theory pass a similar law or even the same one, it is improbable that such action will be forthcoming in the next decade, let alone in the next several months.

You get the last word. I've had you on my dipwad list for about a year, and obviously erred by choosing to engage with you. If you have a dipwad list, please please please put my name on it.

I agree with your take on it Palmer.

I should point out that another poster actually came up with the majority of the post I merely copied and pasted.

They did it here:

-- Is the whiner Schiff now going to write a counter to the counter memo? --

Heheheh. I figure not. From this point the press has the talking points, and will repeat them at will. Easy enough to ignore the point by point counter from the HPSCI majority.

I was of the impression that a FISC Judge has already determined in a declassified opinion and order that substantial reform of the application process was required.

That’s an accurate translation - memo is mostly attacks / commentary on the committee Republicans and attacks on the President.

However, the media is breaking in with “special reports” about how it “rebuts” what the “GOP memo” said and they pretty much declare it is telling the truth vs. GOP propaganda - saying Nunes is “doubling down” in response to the Dem memo as though it is totally above reproach and not deserving of any skepticism. Of course they don’t report the Grassley memo which was completed in a completely separate investigation corroborated the same exact findings and more - they don’t even acknowledge the Grassley memo exists or its contents.

I’m having a senior moment. When did Andrew Mcabe testify before the House Intelligence Committee that the FISA warrants would not have been granted if it were not for the Steele dossier?

Man is that ABC article a bunch of meandering crap that misses the point.

Getting a warrant from a secret court IS different. That's the point. But, good to know that ABC is in favor of secretly undertaking surveillance of say, itself, based on nothing more than ludicrous allegations. After all, there is no way to know, for sure, without snooping.

"most important fact" from the "otherwise shoddy memo was that FBI investigation began July 2016 with your advisor, Papadopoulos, who was secretly discussing stolen Clinton emails with the Russians."

That's true.It was also in July 2016 that the FISC first refused an FBI request to wiretap Page. Of course, the FBI was not successful in getting a wiretap until AFTER the Steele Dossier, so when it began is beside the point.

BTW, the best thing to come out of all of this is that we can all now spell "dossier".

The April FISC opinion was on 702 practices and subsequent unmasking. Totally different part of the law from the law used to get a SPECIFIC warrant against Carter Page.

The Obama administration abused 702 processes too, but that is not what the Nunes/Schiff memos are about.

The majority has had the Schiff memo from the moment it was voted out of committee for House viewing - two weeks more or less.

Apparently McCabe did so in his private testimony before the HPSCI.
