In Florida, one of the nation's largest school districts has overhauled its discipline policies with a single purpose in mind — to reduce the number of children going into the juvenile justice system.
It's a move away from so-called "zero tolerance" policies that require schools to refer even minor misdemeanors to the police. Critics call it a "school to prison pipeline."
Civil rights and education activists say the policy can be a model for the nation.
Under a new program adopted by the Broward County School District, non-violent misdemeanors — even those that involve alcohol, marijuana or drug paraphernalia — will now be handled by the schools instead of the police.

It turns out that this was not at all a “failure” of law enforcement and the school system, but rather the result of actual compliance with an idiotic liberal policy that had taken effect in 2009. In that year, Broward County schools and law enforcement entered into a conscious agreement to stop enforcing the law on school campuses in order to “improve” statistics related to student behavior. By improving those statistics – by artificially reducing the number of reported instances of criminal behavior and student arrests – the school district and local law enforcement would gain access to more state and federal funding.
In other words, it was all a money grab, and now 17 people are dead as a result.

In the liberal world cause-and-effect is just a term used by those awful conservatives to try to deflect from their guilt. The term actually means nothing to the liberal mind. it is gibberish.

In the Parkland case, their security system had a dismal record concerning student safety and security that should be brought to public discussion particularly beginning with this school having a so called “gun free zone”.
It did have an officer who may be armed assigned to patrol the multi acre site in a golf cart, but bans guns from the rest of its internal security
Criticism arose when the officer assigned to this duty who was nearing retirement He was reported to arrive late and after Cruz had entered the building but stationed himself outside the large structure and had called for support. Two officers responded Which and did the same. He then left before Cruz did.
Those laissez faire attitudes strongly suggest examining records of reporting how the bureaucracy at this school handled student vs student, and student vs teacher (Cruz was accused of this) altercations, vandalism, thefts, and drug use. Which are bound to occur were being dealt with.To which a dramatic reduction in disciplinary incidents were reported after a visit by Obama occurred.
Because of these Ding Bat liberal policies it brings up another question. Just how safe and secure are those kids ? There’s a lot of krap that happens; Assaults, fights, thefts, books and items stolen, teachers accosted, kids intimidated....
Examine records reporting how student vs student, and student vs teacher altercations, vandalism, and thefts, which are bound to occur were being dealt with.
Because in an educational unit this size it’s pretty clear their security system failed . In a secure system Cruz would have never gotten inside.
Now that school board has decided to tear down the school which was probably raised by a funding referendums and the grounds house a memorial.
I love the school to prison pipeline, if it allows serious students to learn in a quiet, safe environment. That means no thugs and no drugs.
Further, any student that lays a finger on a teacher is gone, no questions asked.
Good teachers must be always safe; there are fewer of them and they are intrinsically more valuable than thugs and druggies.
Well, what's happenning in Florida was stupid in 2013 and more so today as QED recent events.
There is no such thing as "minor misdemeanors in school."
If 20 students are prevented from learning by a few thugs/druggies in class, that should be a felony. It's a theft of time and life that can never be replaced.
An example for the rest of the nation? I HOPE NOT!!
You only get one chance to learn elementary STEM subjects in life. 25-year old second graders look funny in an elementary class, among normal children.

Superintendent Robert Runcie was hired by the school board from the Chicago Public School system where he was the chief of staff to the Chicago Superintendent. His background was consulting.
Best part yet - he and Obama were friends in Chicago. What could go wrong?
I’ll blame the school; they knew something that caused them to prohibit the shooter from entering school grounds “with a backpack” - because he’d had bullets in a pack in a previous encounter there.
The school and the Sheriff’s Department are both to blame as well as the FBI. You sound like you’re a teacher, holding the school blameless in spite of any information to the contrary.
The school isn’t blameless but cops have the authority to arrest peoplepe, yet they didn’t but blame the school. I’m not nor have I ever been a teacher.
