• The FBI (who have guns) didn’t pick up on tips that Cruz was armed, mentally unstable, made threats on social media, and had a prior history with the school system.
• Police (who have guns) were watching the action at the school on CCTV with a 20 minute delay. The situation was over before their self-imposed delay gave them cause to act.
• A Broward County Deputy Sheriff (who carried a gun) on the school’s property made no effort to engage Cruz given ample opportunity.
Four systemic failures by three groups with direct responsibility for preventing and engaging exactly this sort of crime.
The State’s proposed solution: take the guns away from law-abiding citizens who were not in any way involved.
