Guns and I go back a long way.
My father was a champion skeet shooter. A picture of him aiming his favorite pump skyward has pride of place in our living room. He owned fine rifles and shotguns, and he valued them.
My first experience with pulling a trigger came late, by family standards. I was already 7 or 8 when my dad and Uncle George took me out back of Old Lilys house and handed me a sawed-off shotgun (illegal then and now) kept handy for woodchucks and rattlesnakes. The recoil didnt knock me off my feet, but my shoulder ached for weeks.
Im blessed to have few material regrets, but I still feel a sting when I recall how, after my fathers bankruptcy, we had to sell his guns to put food on the table. Those arms were important to him and, thus, to me.
I served in the US Army, including unforgettable years in an infantry battalion. I fired my share of automatic weapons, from M16A1s to machine guns and even Kalashnikovs. (Lets not talk about dud-grenade disposal . . .)
And Im a gun owner. As I write these lines, theres an 1858 Tower musket behind me and a Colt on my desk.
But I believe, on moral, practical and constitutional grounds, that no private citizen should own an automatic weapon or a semi-automatic weapon that can easily be modified for automatic effects.

Ahhh...the “beautiful gun” versus “ugly gun” crowd. `Golfers with guns’ that’s a good one.
Back in ‘92 former Sen. Bob Kerrey did an add for the AWB bill where he held up his beautiful Ruger Red Wing O/U shotgun & intoned that such was far superior to those ugly AR’s & AK’s.
He lost. Then there are “Fudds” who prize their fine hunting rifles & shotguns with richly grained stocks (better than today’s gray composite cr@p, I’ll admit) and will go on to state they would never use them in self defense.
BTW, the right to possess firearms is useless without the right of self defense. Look at Britain: shoot an intruder, go to prison.
This Ping List is for all things pertaining to the 2nd Amendment.
FReepmail me if you want to be added to or deleted from the list.

I’m glad that as a soldier, his opinion means more than mine.
Hes gay.
Ralph does know it is called a Modern Sporting Rifle.
Author wrote “assault weapons”. No military man thinks that way. Especially infantry.
I was 11B. I have no idea what an assault rifle is.
And now you're one of those "enemies ... domestic" against which you once swore to defend the Constitution. You have perjured your oath, Ralph. You have dishonored the uniform you once wore; you have disgraced the flag under which you once served. You are unworthy to be a citizen of this Great Republic. Go away, Ralph. Hide under a rock in shame and ignominy.
BS
Nice picture, Ralph. Needs to be added to the list of men who look like old lesbians

My freedom to own a gun does NOT originate from the US Constitution. It is not derived from any man. My right to own a firearm is God-given. Period.
So I don't care what Col. Peter's errant personal opinion may be. Nor do I care what "the children" are manipulated to say.
Another Fudd. If he cared to look it up, firearms that are easily converted to shoot full auto are already banned.
And the damned unconstitutional National Firearms Act needs to be repealed, since SCOTUS hasn't the guts to simply throw it out as they should.
Total Fuddery.
Don’t ask, don’t tell, Ralphie.
If you were truly a military man, you would know damn well that the AR-15 is NOT an assault weapon.
FU, Peters!
You ain’t no kinda man, faggot, and especially not a military man.
Statist.
Wants the citizens at the mercy of Fedzilla.
I despise this jackass with a white-hot hatred.
“You are,a dumb ass military man if you classify a sem-auto weapon an assault weapon.”
Aren’t most handguns today semi-automatic?
“...we had to sell his guns to put food on the table.”
I quit reading after this, realizing how stupid he is. The disconnect with guns goes in all sorts of directions I guess.
I know Ralph Peters pretty well; we attended graduate classes together and we’ve spoken a few times since. He’s a bright, thoughtful guy, but, as my uncle used to say, “He’s a man educated beyond his intelligence.” My late father, a retired USAF Chief Master Sergeant would have said, “He’s a little too impressed with himself.” I’d just call him a “tool” and way too inclined to adopt political correctness when it serves his purposes.
