I’m a military man and I think we should ban assault weapons

Guns and I go back a long way.

My father was a champion skeet shooter. A picture of him aiming his favorite pump skyward has pride of place in our living room. He owned fine rifles and shotguns, and he valued them.

My first experience with pulling a trigger came late, by family standards. I was already 7 or 8 when my dad and “Uncle” George took me out back of Old Lily’s house and handed me a sawed-off shotgun (illegal then and now) kept handy for woodchucks and rattlesnakes. The recoil didn’t knock me off my feet, but my shoulder ached for weeks.

I’m blessed to have few material regrets, but I still feel a sting when I recall how, after my father’s bankruptcy, we had to sell his guns to put food on the table. Those arms were important to him and, thus, to me.

I served in the US Army, including unforgettable years in an infantry battalion. I fired my share of automatic weapons, from M16A1s to machine guns and even Kalashnikovs. (Let’s not talk about dud-grenade disposal . . .)

And I’m a gun owner. As I write these lines, there’s an 1858 Tower musket behind me and a Colt on my desk.

But I believe, on moral, practical and constitutional grounds, that no private citizen should own an automatic weapon or a semi-automatic weapon that can easily be modified for automatic effects.

Pussy.

So in this one case, we have;
1) a school board refusing to arrest student criminals so they can defraud the Feds out of funds.
2)A leftist Sheriff who sends cops to his house 39 times, doing nothing.
3)A family calls the cops and says he has guns and has held them to people’s heads.
4) An FBI who blows off a warning from a YouTuber who saw him say he going to attack a school.
5) a tipster who sees the Sheriff wont do anything and calls the FBI with details that he has a gun, suffered the death of his last parent, is losing it, and is planning a school shooting.

In this environment of consistent misfeasance and malfeasance and political corruption, you want to tell me I need to give up the best way to defend myself? GFY

And also, I do note that in a broad brush sense, the military is no longer our friend on 2A issues.

Is that 0.5 guns per adult or per capita?

From Wikipedia:

There are no official statistics, and estimates vary considerably. The Small Arms Survey of 2016 placed Swiss gun ownership per capita at 24.45%.

My other info was not dated nor did it say. I was primarily concerned with the law. http://factmyth.com/factoids/switzerland-requires-citizens-to-own-guns/

Seemed the easiest to copy and paste after looking at quite a few. My apologies.

Assault weapon”, OTOH, is a vague term invented by “enemies ...

I guess I have no idea why you think we are disagreeing.

First off he’s not a man, but rather a metrosexual second I don’t care what he did nothing gives him the right to remove my right to self defense.

And, not unimportantly, as an alternative too a standing army, which the Founders thought to be a threat to liberty. Leftist logic would have us believe that because the threat now exists, we no longer need to defend against it.

Maybe we're not.

Back in #86, you denied knowing what an "assault RIFLE" is. Based on the US Army definition, I asserted that your M16 was/is an "assault RIFLE" (not an "assault WEAPON"). I think we're agreeing that the latter term is propaganda nonsense.

I spent 24 years in the military defending the Second Amendment and you sir are a disgrace to the military. You obviously have no idea why the right to bare arms shall not be infringed. The reason for school shootings is because of liberals taking god and morality out of the classroom. When you teach kids there is no good or bad then you will get more bad than good.

Ralph:

You have the First Amendment right to campaign to repeal the Second Amendment.

It would be the honorable thing for you to do, instead of trying to sneak a repeal in by claiming the obvious words do not mean what was written at the time.

It is despicable for you to subvert your oath of office and the rule of law with the trite “living Constitution” play you are making.

Ahhh...you cannot easily own an automatic weapon. And if you are caught modifying the trigger mechanism to turn it full auto, expect to get a visit.

I know you can legally own a machine gun, but other than it being technically legal, few can afford the costs associated with it.

Words have meanings. This guy uses weasel words to make himself sound “enlightened.” But he’s a weasel.

I would imagine that the bullying that has gone on at these schools is defenseable freedom of speech. How about we address the root cause: these kids treat each other like assholes.

I’m a military man (US Army Combat Infantryman) and I DON’T think we should ban assault weapons.

They might be needed someday to protect ourselves from foreign invaders or a tyrannical government.

The difference between ourselves and other countries who have banned firearms is WE IN AMERICA ARE FREE!!!

They are SLAVES to their ruling government. And at any time a tyrannical government can ship their population on trains to the ovens an gas chambers and the SLAVES can do NOTHING about it.

Read “More Guns, Less Crime” by John Lott. America should follow Israel’s lead. Teachers in schools should be armed.
