Cracks me up...Securityman...LOL If you have never been in a live fire situation, you..most of you.. don’t know what your talking about. There are rules of engagement. You do no one any good going in gun(s)blazing, when you don’t know where the perp is, what he has for fire power, where your back up is, when it will arrive, where they will arrive, if they will arrive, and if you can safely remove hostages or victims with your weapon to protect them as they leave the crime scene. He had 7 minutes total to access the situation. That is NOT a lot of time, then take into consideration your age, physical condition, skill with a firearm (many police NEVER fire their weapon while on duty), and if your honest, fear factors we all share of getting killed. But I prefer to believe that he was helping kids escape with weapon drawn to protect them. WE DON’T KNOW...and all the dirty harrys out there cannot say with certainty, that they would not have behaved in a similar manner. I have seen it first hand. Many police arrive 8 minutes after shooting begins because statistically, the shooters have resolved the issue or are dead. I would also point out the elephant in the room. In this small community no other officers showed up to help this one for over 10 minutes. By this time, the shooter had ditched his weapons, blended into the crowd, and left the scene. How is it possible that not ONE of these students did not recognize the shooter and tell the police when he left the campus??? Not one child had been injured in the area this sheriffs deputy was at, and the shooter left in a different exit. What is clear is that the court of public opinion has found its Judas, and passed judgment without knowing the facts.
All that is left is for the Police Chief to blame this officer, divert blame actually, to cover the departments ass. Why else would he be allowed to resign, with impunity, and draw retirement pay? If he had really done something wrong, they could have fired him, and denied his pay, or at least have to go to court to fight it. No, there is definitely more to the story, and the fault lies squarely on the shoulders of those who should have responded to back up the Office. It is insane to expect one officer to enter the building with a hand gun, against a shooter with .223 rounds and a large magazine. Seeking a target of opportunity, an advantageous shot to take him out would be smart. Once the officer fired, The shooter when being fired upon would quickly rack up kills IMO rather than random pot shots if he thought he would be taken out. The kid went into a Gun Free Zone and took out innocents, he was a coward. That gives NO ONE license to demand the officer unwisely sacrifice his life when no backup was forthcoming.

I dont think the Sheriff would have called him a coward, or he would have been put on admin leave for his actions, or decided to “resign” in very short order if he was “helping children escape with his gun drawn”.
