Deputy who didn’t stop Florida shooting thinks he ‘did a good job’

The sheriff’s deputy who failed to engage the shooter at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School “believed he did a good job” because he called in the location of the massacre and gave a description of the shooter, a top union official said Thursday.

School resource officer Scot Peterson, who resigned in disgrace from the Broward County Sheriff’s Office, was “distraught” about shooting that killed 17 people — but believed he did his duty, according to the president of the Broward Sheriff’s Office Deputies Association.

“He believed he did a good job calling in the location, setting up the perimeter and calling in the description (of Cruz),” said the union official, Jim Bell.

"Yeah lucky for the FBI, they found a new fall guy."

And for his supervisor ... that being the sheriff.

While not defending what this deputy did (or didn't do), I find it curious that the sheriff was so quick to go public with information on his malfeasance and dismissal. That's rather uncharacteristic for law enforcement in these types of situations.

And, it takes the spotlight off the sheriff himself.

"Unfortunately, it WOULD NOT be only our life you would be putting on the line. Any children in the hallway, the nearby rooms, upstairs, downstairs, or even outside could have been hit while he shot at you.

That's one of the most ignorant things I've ever seen posted on FR. You seem to have forgotten what the officer was supposed to be responding to.

I see completely what you're trying to say in your defense of this deputy, but to imply that he'd further endanger kids WHO WERE ALREADY BEING SHOT by engaging the shooter, is simply ludicrous.

I simply cannot express the depth of loathing and contempt I have for this bag of excrement.

He thinks he “did a good job”?

So much for narrative that “this poor guy will have to live with what he did every day for the rest of his life.” that I’ve been reading on all the threads.

Sounds like he’s feeling pretty goo about himself if he thinks he did a good job.

The guy had a weapon, heard shots and did nothing but phone it in... how appropriate to use that time-worn cliche. Any LEO worth his moral salt would have drawn his weapon and gone in toward the sound. It is a calculated risk, but that is why he has the badge of authority and a sidearm to enforce it.

Hell, an average concealed carry person would have found a personal moral obligation to go in and address the shooter. I guess you are unaware of the countless times average citizens grab or draw their firearms in defense of a situation... they never... I mean never... just get on the damn phone and set up a a freakin’ perimeter. What a disgrace!

Better just to let the perp go ahead and shoot everybody... right? What a disgrace. In fact, why even have a damn gun and a badge. All this coward needed was a phone... hell not even that. He could have borrowed one.

You’re trying to give exceptional examples to a general idea. There is training for scenarios. The idea is to stay safe and save as many lives as you can. I don’t have tome to explain every situation to you. I was a peace officer not a rangemaster

Just Damn.

I said way upthread - yesterday - that Peterson had better lawyer up.

I see he has plenty of armed guards protecting him. Too bad those 17 dead did not have the same luxury.

This officer could hear the gunfire and would have a chance to get behind the shooter and take him out. Cruz would not have known when or where an armed person would be coming up behind him unless he was turning in circles while shooting. The officer had the chance the get the drop on Cruz.

Yes, easy for me to say, but isn’t the officer trained to take down shooters? Cops don’t just stand around until a perp runs out of ammo or decides to stop shooting.

As I read that - I wonder if Peterson was under a standing order to STAND DOWN whenever teens were taking criminal actions.

Shades of Benghazi!

He wasn’t a deputy like you think of it that actually do something. He was one of those deputies that just monitor the situation. Just like the commercial.

“Their grand police department didn’t even bother to make sure this guy was taken care off the 30 times they were called out on him.”

There’s been a few articles posted about Obama DOJ policies to reduce “at risk” high schoolers arrest rates. Having local police refer the “matters” to school administrators instead. Miami-Dade and Broward counties seemingly had adopted that policy.

Now the left is pushing back on having actual law enforcement security over fear minority kids would be sent to jail.

Thread info from another source........

When gunfire broke out, Israel said, Peterson was in a different building,
helping resolve an unidentified issue with another student.

He rushed to Building 12, but did not go inside.

“I think he (Peterson) got on his radio at a point and time and he took
up a position where it looked like he could see the western most entry
into the building and never went in,” Israel said.
