Fresh off of being featured on a CNN town hall about school shootings, which was really a two-hour television event for anti-gun liberals to bash the National Rifle Association, Broward County Sheriff revealed a disturbing development in the investigation.
The on-duty school resource officer failed to immediately engage shooter Nikolas Cruz at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School last Wednesday. It’s part of an ongoing list of failures that don’t stop with local law enforcement. The FBI was warned on January 5 about Cruz and did nothing to follow up on it. FBI Director Chris Wray apologized that protocols were not followed in this matter.
Upon viewing the video footage in which the officer in question, Scot Peterson, waited four minutes outside the building. The shooting lasted six minutes. Seventeen people were killed and at least a dozen more were injured. Sheriff Scott Israel said he’s “sick to his stomach” Mr. Peterson never went into the building (via Miami Herald) [emphasis mine]
Douglas school resource officer suspended, retiring after failing to enter school, engage shooter
On Thursday, Israel focused much of his press conference on the school resource officer stationed at the campus, Scot Peterson, who chose to resign after he was suspended without pay. Peterson’s decision was made after investigators reviewed surveillance footage of the Parkland shooting.
“I am devastated,” Israel said. “Sick to my stomach. He never went in.”
According to Israel, Peterson remained outside Building 12 for about four minutes. The shooting lasted about six minutes, he said. When the shooting began the deputy was inside the school handling a matter with a female student.
A review of surveillance video showed that the deputy was in position and armed but never entered the building. He remained stationed outside the building while the shooting went on.
Israel said Peterson should have “Went in. Addressed the killer. Killed the killer.”
The armed school resource officer at Marjorie Stoneman Douglas High School responded to the shooting BUT NEVER WENT IN for “upward or 4 minutes” while the gunmen killed people, said Sheriff Scott Israel.— Marc Caputo (@MarcACaputo) February 22, 2018
“Never went in” Sheriff said. Officer “clearly” could hear gunfire
Sheriff: “Devastated.Sick to my stomach. There are no words. These families lost their children. We lost coaches. I’ve been to the funerals. I’ve been to the homes where they sit in shiva. I’ve been to the vigils”— Marc Caputo (@MarcACaputo) February 22, 2018
Sheriff Scott Israel said Officer Scott Peterson failed by waiting outside the Marjory Stoneman Douglas HS building for about 4 of 6 minutes while Nikolas Cruz killed 17 people
What should Peterson have done

As noted above, school resource officer Scott Peterson quit when an investigation was opened up into his conduct. Sheriff Israel said video and witnesses show that Peterson was outside the SE corner of the building and "clearly" could her gunshots.

Peterson has now resigned in light of this development.
Incompetence at every level of this guy’s department but CNN got their show trial to take it out on people who had zero to do with it.— Stephen Miller (@redsteeze) February 23, 2018
Government equally pulled the trigger. And they know it, which is why they have armed guards outside the house of the coward.
A pistol against a rifle in those circumstances would normally be sufficient to stop the massacre until help arrives.
He should have to take questions from the families.
Yup...
Only LEOs should have guns.
Uh huh....
Oh...wait... this guy was a LEO...
Guess “To Serve and Protect” wasn’t written on this one’s car door.
FN 5.7 with three 20 round magazines of T6B ammo is what all of these school police should be carrying.
And as many teachers as possible should be carrying concealed as well.
I agree with you that America should follow Israel’s lead.
Real combat is scary.
But you have to control your fear and let your training take over and work automatically - or you are a liability on the battlefield.
Very sorry to hear about this. Id rather be dead than not move to the sound of gunfire in that building to kill the shooter and save childrens lives.
In 2003 there was a gang related shooting in my neighborhood where a guy was shot in a front yard as children played. The neighbors under fire complained of extremly slow resonse by the LA county sherrifs who waited in cars at the entrance to the neighborhood as the 911 operator asked the mom hiding with children in the closet to go see if the shooter was still out there The HOA held a neighborhood town hall meeting with the sherrifs and here is the sherrif watch commanders response...”our primary duty is enforcement of the law, not public protection. My primary duty is the safetey of my officers ....blah blah then came Q&A at which time I raised my hand stood and said , “why are you such cowards, you are in the wrong business, you are fired, I will defend myself” got up and walked out, to a sprinkling of applause from a few brave people
My military training stressed that “the purpose of a pistol is to fight your way to your shotgun.” But that was Force Protection school where we really only shot pistols and shotguns as we were already Rifleman qualified.
