NYS Sheriffs' Association calls for an armed cop in every school

In the wake of a Florida school shooting that took the lives of 17 people, the New York State Sheriffs’ Association is calling for armed officers in every school in New York.

With more 6,700 public and private schools in the state, the Sheriffs’ Association estimates that the cost would roughly be equal to adding a teacher to each of those schools.

The association is calling on the State Legislature to incorporate the cost into the 2018 state budget.

“This will be an expensive undertaking, but we owe it to our children, and their parents, to provide a safe place for education to take place,” said Wayne County Sheriff Barry Virts, President of the New York State Sheriffs’ Association.

Many school districts already have a School Resource Officer paid for by the district or county government.

“The only way to assure that every student has the protection of an armed officer in close proximity is for the state to provide a reliable funding stream for SROs. Many school districts and local governments are unable to do it due to tax caps and limited funding sources,” Sheriff Virts added.

Does not seemed to have done any good in Florida.

A person can legitimately argue that education is not one of the responsibilities of government to fund. However, the security of the citizenry is the major responsibility that we have assigned to government. So, to fund the security of its people is something that is clearly constitutional.

and where do you draw the line? shopping malls as armed camps? The post office? Hospitals?

Sorry. I’m not willing to live that way for a statistically infinitesimal risk.

That’s a reasonable response. At a minimum, I’d draw it at where people are forced by the government to be in given areas for given periods of time. I’d make sure other areas are aware they are liable for not having security, that any injured or bereaved have legal recourse which cannot be signed away.

The government doesn’t “force” you to be anywhere (except Federal prison). You can home school. You can send your kid to private schools.

Not so. They are required to be schooled. And many don’t have the means or the ability to use alternative methods.

I live in Ohio. I know plenty of kids who are home schooled. Or go to private schools.

I will reiterate; the government doesn’t FORCE you to be anywhere.

Fellow Buckeye. Cool.

In any case, read the findlaw write up on compulsory education law in Ohio. It’s good to know whether you agree with me or not.
