Ledyard police said a 17-year-old high school student has been arrested and charged with threatening and breach of peace.

According to a letter from the high school principal, that student made a comment stating “I could buy an AR-15”, the same gun used in the Florida shooting.

The principal said the student wasn’t threatening to do harm, but rather was talking about buying guns. The principal said the student does not have access to guns at home.

From the article:
The offense is akin to joking about a bomb in the airport. One simply doesn’t do it.
What? I find this completely bogus.

Based on the comments from the school, it sounds like the police made a false arrest.

The kid’s parents ought to sue.

Who gets the stupid award?

The principal who determines there was no threat but kicked the decision to the police?

The police who appear to have used very poor judgment?

Maybe the parents who didn't think to keep all public school boys home for the rest of the month?

The reports of a number of potential copycats the past week is scary.

There have been numerous news reports of suspects being reported to police and follow-ups end up with arrests and significant caches of weapons/ammo.

“At the beginning of our first period class, a student stated, roughly, “I could buy an AR-15.”.....The student did not, in fact, specifically threaten to do harm but rather referenced the purchase of a weapon.”

If the kid were screaming it or speaking in the context of getting weapons such as were used in the FL shooting, I could see having the cops have a talk with him.

But, as it is, they trampled all over this kid’s rights for no valid reason. Goofy over-reaction.

A kid at the meeting with Trump said he just turned 18 and be could buy an AR 15. I didn’t see him being hauled off.

I hope that the arrested kid’s lawyer heard that other kid’s comment.

An incident today at one of our local high schools where a student accused another student of making violent threats. Naturally, all the "adults" freaked out and the police were called, media notified, etc...

After missing the hundreds of red flags that Nikolas Cruz was waving prior to his killing spree, I expect school officials to now overreact about everything as a result.

“could” is subject to many meanings. It is a big English weasel word. So obviously the worst interpretation was taken, as if he had said “I want to buy ...”.

In today’s combative, confrontational, “zero tolerance” world, he was grabbed and persecuted. For words.

Anyone still think there’s free speech?

Ever make a mistake in speaking at an airport? “ooooo, you said the wrong word! jail for you!”
