ELK GROVE (CBS13) A war was lost before it ever could begin, according to local historians who were hoping to fire up a mock battle.
The Elk Grove Historical Society planned a Revolutionary War reenactment for more than a year and has had similar events in the past, but its now forced to cancel the event because of local gun laws.
The group had already printed up flyers to market the mock battle, hoping to draw in 3,000 people for the two-day event at a regional park.
We would have encampments and all kinds of entertainment for the kids to see, said Jim Entrican, facilities manager for the group and president of the Native Son of the Golden West in Elk Grove.
Late last year the society was told by the park district that the show could not go on.
I dont know. Its just frustrating, very frustrating, he said.
The reenactment was to include firing black powder muskets as a part of the history lesson, but the group was told thats against the rules.
According to a city law which says you cannot Use, maintain, possess, fire, or discharge any firearm.
Theres no firing guns in a park, but theres exceptions for each one of the ordinances, which he adds the exceptions have been made in the past and cant understand why no now.
They actually asked us if we can use wooden sticks, and can you see 12 men in full regalia and another 12 charging with wooden sticks saying Bang bang! It just doesnt have the same effect, he said.
Soldiers who perform the reenactment say the simulated gunfire is a crucial element to the historical accuracy and in all the years theyve been performing the battles, no other city has ever denied them a permit to perform.
History is important and were losing it, he said.
So for now, this history lesson will have to wait until the rules can be changed.
Were taking it one step further and trying to change the ordinance, he said, but that could take months.
The group is working with the city and park district to come up with a solution before its next event.
Our wonderful media doesn’t know the difference between the Revolutionary War and the Civil War.
They don’t know the difference between a semiautomatic and a ‘assault’ weapon either...............
They know an assault flintlock when they see one.
All Blunderbusses obviously.
They can however tell you every one of the 57 current genders...
Wasn’t the once vaunted German army essentially doing the same thing?
Actually that was the US Army in 1940.
No, the German Army was kicking butt in 1940.
“They dont know the difference between a semiautomatic and a assault weapon either...............”
And, it seems, between a black powder musket and an M4 assault carbine.
I’m surprised reenactors haven’t been barred from dressing up as confederates altogether. /serious
It seems it was either the Germans or the Dutch army a year or two back was having to use broomsticks due to budget woes.
My memory could be slipping too.
And they think we are stupid!
A couple years ago went to a Civil war reenactment at Gettysburg. Wow. It gripes your soul.
The more American’s that see reenactments they more they will understand what it takes to be free. or at least some of them will.
If you are both a liberal gun grabber and a historian
then this one is for you!
And identify each letter of the alphabet such as LGBQTXYZ...
If I am wrong someone correct me but it seems that City law/ordinance is in direct conflict with the 2nd Amendment of the Constitution.
Anyone in that voting district who has any concern at all for the abrogation of their rights should file lawsuit after lawsuit to get that law repealed.
Good gravy I’m sick of this totalitarian crap!
Peach
this in a city where, just a guess, 90 percent of the households own firearms of various types .. and where semi-auto rifles are reportedly GREATLY in vogue (to put it mildly)
methinks the local politicians are very much out of phase with their real voters (perhaps a few leftwing demon-strators with some Soroznazi $$ have scared them at city hall?)
That’s possible. They are not in that good of shape now.
My memory slips, too. Lol
