ELK GROVE (CBS13) A war was lost before it ever could begin, according to local historians who were hoping to fire up a mock battle.
The Elk Grove Historical Society planned a Revolutionary War reenactment for more than a year and has had similar events in the past, but its now forced to cancel the event because of local gun laws.
The group had already printed up flyers to market the mock battle, hoping to draw in 3,000 people for the two-day event at a regional park.
We would have encampments and all kinds of entertainment for the kids to see, said Jim Entrican, facilities manager for the group and president of the Native Son of the Golden West in Elk Grove.
Late last year the society was told by the park district that the show could not go on.
I dont know. Its just frustrating, very frustrating, he said.
The reenactment was to include firing black powder muskets as a part of the history lesson, but the group was told thats against the rules.
According to a city law which says you cannot Use, maintain, possess, fire, or discharge any firearm.
Theres no firing guns in a park, but theres exceptions for each one of the ordinances, which he adds the exceptions have been made in the past and cant understand why no now.
They actually asked us if we can use wooden sticks, and can you see 12 men in full regalia and another 12 charging with wooden sticks saying Bang bang! It just doesnt have the same effect, he said.
Soldiers who perform the reenactment say the simulated gunfire is a crucial element to the historical accuracy and in all the years theyve been performing the battles, no other city has ever denied them a permit to perform.
History is important and were losing it, he said.
So for now, this history lesson will have to wait until the rules can be changed.
Were taking it one step further and trying to change the ordinance, he said, but that could take months.
The group is working with the city and park district to come up with a solution before its next event.
Black powder weapons are not "firearms" in Florida.
Last I heard, muzzle-loaders weren’t considered “firearms.”
ah Elk Grove gmyformer city of residence. Many sheriff’s deputies CHP, and Corrections. Wonder how this law passed?
German army used broomsticks instead of guns during training
Germanys army is so under-equipped that it used broomsticks instead of machine guns

“If you are both a liberal gun grabber and a historian
then this one is for you!”
DOES NOT COMPUTE
DOES NOT COMPUTE
ERROR ERROR
Historians (some) enjoy Revolutionary War and Civil War
Re-enactments which usually includes the sounds of
musket and cannon fire. Academic historians tend to be
politically liberal and tend to want to restrict gun
ownership altough the simulated sounds of weapons
firing doesn’t bother them.
I was musing about the confluence of historians interested
in realistic historic re-enactment and politically
correct liberals who are against gun ownership. There
in Elk Grove (app 1.5 hr from home) you have city
fathers playing out their liberal fantasies.
I was being facetious. OK now?
“I was being facetious. OK now?”
Wait, then or now ? Like just now ?
And if not now, when were you being facetious ?
I know what you were talking about. But one can’t be a historian and still prefer an unarmed populace over an armed one.
They can be one or the other.
You are being facetious this time.
You might be surprised at what passes for a Historian
these days. I have encountered Historians who are actually
unfamiliar with Madison’s Federalist #46. I wish you
were correct about Historians and the 2A but I know
different.
The History prof I graded papers for was not aware of
Hitler’s real last name until I informed him and this
guy specialized in modern W Euro history. He even had
a German surname.
Cheers! .....then, now, later.
The title is wrong.
It’s a Revolutionary War reenactment..............
