SUGAR LAND One thing Sen. Ted Cruz isnt doing as he seeks a second term is running away from the president. Despite a checkered history, the Texan boasts about his access and influence on matters ranging from taxes to the Paris Climate Accord.
I spent a lot of time urging President Trump to pull out of that deal, he recounted. I spent 45 minutes on Air Force One saying, `Mr. President, this is killing jobs and its bad for our economy.'
The day after Trump announced his decision, Cruz continued, he calls me on my cellphone. He says, 'Well, Ted, I did it, what do you think? ... I told him, `Mr. President, everyone who hates you is ticked off and everyone who loves you is thrilled.

Midterms almost always punish the party in power. Trumps low ratings wont help. Rather than distancing himself, though, Cruz is fully embracing Trump quite a reversal for someone who this time two years ago was calling Trump a pathological liar.
Hes successfully reinvented himself, said Pablo Mastrangelo, 41, an engineering contractor from Katy who attended the dinner. He has no choice. ... Theyre not best friends, but Trump is the president. Hes a Republican. Cruz is playing that game as best he can.
Irritating the establishment was central to Cruzs first Senate run and 2016 White House bid. His bond with an unconventional president is central to his re-election pitch.
He has become the confidant who gets the job done for the president of the United States, Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick told activists in Sugar Land. "He is the go-to guy. He's the guy."

Texas Republicans remember his resistance to explicitly endorsing Trump at the GOP convention, but few still hold it against him.

He had a right to be pissed about some of the things said but hes come around and is a good ally of the prez
I’m amazed at the seething hatred you guys have for Cruz. Reminds me of how the media hates Trump.
A whole nest full of traitor GOP senators and you jokers scream the loudest over a guy that’s our most dependable conservative vote. Sheer madness.
Yep. The Russian troll farms specifically targeted Cruz and (for some reason) Rubio.
I recall a huge spike in traffic from outside the USA on FR during the primaries. Undoubtedly, this was the foreign trolls.
And, like Michael Moore still continues to be a useful idiot for the Russians on one side, our own idiots continue to be Putin’s butt boys.
(And, for the record, I voted for Trump and love what’s he’s done.)
Never was. Never will be
Exactly.
Trump is probably the only one who could withstand the assault he has been under. And had Cruz won, the assault would have been just as brutal.
But now that we’ve seen what they can do, it will have less effect next time. Its like what they did to Bork. People never forgave it, and when they tried to “Bork” Judge Thomas, it didn’t work.
Having seen what they have tried to do to Trump, when they try to do it to the next guy we’ll be even more determined to see it through. In another era we might have thought, where there’s smoke there’s fire. Now we know better.
I live in Texas and unless there is some other stellar conservative
that will run against him I will vote for Ted
*********
Well you will have that opportunity in 11 days as the primary of Mar. 1
is fast approaching. Cruz should win the primary and face Beto in the
fall but I don’t see Beto as having any chance at victory.
Ted Cruz is just as eligible as Anwar al-Awlaki’s kids born in Yemen to one citizen parent.
Natural born citizens don’t have an immigration file, they are naturally Americans, children born overseas do.
Welp, I think someone needs to check if they are still "in action"...(or if they have hired American employees) because I still hear the same garbage going on.
No, the United States of America. There is no "dual loyalty" issue here.
Most experts believe Cruz is a natural born citizen, but no president has ever been born outside the U.S.
And "most experts" would also include a unanimous US Supreme Court, which includes Justices like Clarence Thomas.
Now, if anyone would like to make the argument that Clarence Thomas isn't a conservative Justice—or that he'd be inclined to rule Ted Cruz ineligible—please, proceed.
Personally, believe that if Clarence Thomas and his ilk would consider Ted Cruz eligible, then there's not much point in forwarding gratuitous and whimsical eligibility arguments which apparently don't have a legal leg to stand on—even with stalwart "strict constructionists".
Knowing Ted Cruz, I'm confident that this question will eventually be ruled on by a conservative USSC—and in his favor...
Smart political move. It will serve him.
Is he still having late night cheese and condom parties with staffers?
How well did that work out for Iceman?
Aw, come on. He was American from age 16 on. Thats better than some presidents.
The only time Justice Thomas has been asked about eligibility, he responded that they were ducking the issue.
There has been no unanimous Supreme Court decision.
President Trump put the primary battle behind him - but some of his supporters are cultists who are psychologically unable to follow the President's gracious and pragmatic lead.
Most experts believe Cruz is a natural born citizen, but no president has ever been born outside the U.S.
My money is on one Barack Obama who was born in Vancouver, Canada to a mother too young to ever confer her USA citizenship onto the baby she was to give up for adoption but kept at the last minute, until she tired of him around age 5.
Heres my feelings on Cruz in a nutshell.
1. Hes a phony.
2. Hes a womanizer (somehow!!)
3. He is very intelligent and he is a true conservative and we can often count on him to take the right position representing us.
There ya go. Part of life, you take the good with the bad.
