The discussion I want to see opened is why there is no process to ride herd on adopted children with known chronic acting out issues and/or that have a life-changing event like loss of a parent/home (identity) ? We can’t catch every young adult that goes postal, but we know who adopted kids are. It is social agencies who approve parents and the courts who approve adoptions and so bear a responsibility, given known statistics that at least some adoptive children will have behavior issues, to ensure any adoptive child exhibiting a history of unstable behavior receives intervention. But if the parent isn’t self-reporting, then where’s the tool that connects ‘multiple police calls to the home’ with a judge who can order that intervention? We need to do better.
I know that will never happen...

You are on target. Instead of metal detectors, we need mental detectors. Nikolas Cruz should have set off loud pings and pulled aside for his desperately needed mental health. In the past, such troubled kids were sent to a caring family member or a christian pastor for counseling. There was Scouts and Catholic Youth Organization and Boy’s Clubs for the comfort a group would give. Today, the pit of isolation is an easy trap with no way out.
You, as well as Posts #12 (keyhopper), #16 (blueplum), and #26 (Marchmain) have expressed the same idea. This mental train wreck should have been caught much much earlier.

It’s not the killing of animals. He evidently received joy out of killing animals for no reason other than to take their life.
Most of us have killed many animals. That does not make us a murderer of people.
The root of the problem most likely stems from the original reason that he had an adoptive mom.
Violation of the trust between the mother and young child, even when in the womb, is a powerful influence on the developing child’s personality and values.

The media hardly ever if at all tells us if these shooters have ever been prescribed mind-altering meds. Wouldn’t it be nice if outraged media and political loudmouths demanded a ban on those poisons?
