In a hopeful sign for post-Mugabe Zimbabwe, his successor President Emmerson Mnangagwa has decided to stop seizing land from white farmers, offering them 99-year leases on their property instead.

I read a book about South Africa called “Into the Cannibal’s Pot” by Ileana Mercer-————VERY interesting, and a quick read.
The place is a mess.
.
That was my first thought. White farmer drops $$$ getting the farm up and running again, profitable, aaaaand you’re out. Farm seized.
99 year leases? Let’s hope for their sake that Mnangagwa lives that long. I have the feeling that the leases expire when he does, and they get a younger, crazier version of Mugabe in power.
Yes, mess indeed.
Had a friend who hunted in Rhodesia, he just squeaked by before things got really bad.
Backed by what? Mugabe is not long for this world, and you can trust him as far as you can throw him.
“...President Emmerson Mnangagwa has decided to stop seizing land from white farmers, offering them 99-year leases on their property instead.”
What is he really saying here? Is it:
1. That black people can’t farm? I think they can. Skill, learning and lots effort needed to scale it - but humans have been farming for a very, very long time.
2. That persons who previously owned land, worked hard to maintain it, had it taken from them, violently in some cases, are now being ‘rewarded’ with the opportunity to come back?
3. That this deal is limited in time, effectively - we want you back, but not forever. Which also suggests the 99 year lease ends the day the farmers are no longer needed.
President Mnangagwa, I’d say your policy will reap what is sows. And when you inevitably face angry rioters that cannot feed their families - don’t blame the farmers who had property (their means of SURVIVAL) taken, or their wisdom to not come back. It was YOUR foolishness, YOUR continuation of bigotry.
Always sickening to see how people can be oppressed by Governments - Venezuela, North Korea, Romania, Soviet Russia, Cuba, and on and on and on....
One aspect of African society is businesses are often run by foreigners either whites or from other African countries. The reason is if you own a farm or business in your native country all your relatives will expect a cut.
“They have to restore the farms and get them productive again before theyll seize them once more.”
That’s it exactly.
Any farmer who takes this bait gets no sympathy from me.
And tires.
How generous of them. /s

She seemed very happy about Mugabe being ousted.
Offering to lease people the property that you stole from them...
Nonetheless, the math makes it possible for white farmers to make good money on some of these deals. I expect to see some try it out.
The white farmers (Boers) have a union, and most stay in touch, in their diaspora. If things go well, more deals may develop over time.
That’s a fascinating cultural aspect, I’d assume rooted in a collective sharing within tribes/villages, etc. Still, I sense President M’s words as rooted in a continued bigotry.
Having grown up a capitalist, the notion that I just ‘give’ away anything that I earned from my hard work.. just doesn’t compute. The idea that I help others in need, absolutely does.
Thanks
Not a chance. As soon as they get things productive it will be seized again.
Since at any moment in those 99 years the tribalists/racists will decide to murder you and your family...is it worth the gamble?
Because in the case of South Africa in particular whites have been there 16 generations or more
I’m a southerner
You don’t just I’ve up in the face of race guilt push
Yankees don’t understand
Their ancestors left the Steppe and never dealt with race like we or soured African whites have
But look at us now
Where do whites go in the world now?
My kids ask me this
I was looking at Poland before Trump won. At the time I had EU citizenship (Sweden).
When Trump won by the GRACE OF GOD, I got my US citizenship. I will be voting for his second term.
Fact is cannibalism was/is a cultural practice in several African nations. Some say it beats insects as a dietary staple.
