The State of the Union stats don’t lie: Americans are turning against Trump-hating celebrities

The stats don't lie.

Within minutes of President Donald Trump's first State of the Union speech, CBS News revealed their YouGov poll approval ratings on it.

Unsurprisingly, 97% of Republican speech watchers liked it.

More surprisingly, 72% of Independents liked it.

Staggeringly, 43% of Democrats liked it.

Overall, CBS reported that 75% of Americans approved of the speech.

For such a seriously divisive and polarising President, who is currently languishing with just 39% personal approval ratings, these were sensationally good results.

Interestingly, 8/10 Americans in the poll felt the President was trying to unite the country with his speech and two thirds of Americans said it made them feel proud.

Less than a quarter that watched said it made them feel scared or angry.

Contrast this reaction with the instant and so tediously predictable blind rage spewed by the world's liberal celebrities on social media before, during and after the address.

From my own unofficial poll – i.e. my own eyes on Twitter – I'd say 99% of them were so furious at the speech they could barely think straight.

'I was told darkness could not exist in the light,' tweeted Sarah Silverman. 'But here it is, for everyone to not see.'

Jim Carrey tweeted an illustration of sharks across a map of America, then another of a weeping Abraham Lincoln and the caption: 'It's my party and I'll cry if I want to.'

The “old drug war” isn’t working all that well, and too ham handed an approach will send genuine sufferers to the streets.

On the other hand I’ve seen locally what too lax an attitude can do. People will begin burning themselves out, blinded to the signs of danger by pain and pep pills. Machinelike medicine is partly to blame here... doctors used to be able to know their patients better.

“seriously divisive and polarising President”?

Obviously not, Daily Mail.

And those “39% personal approval ratings” are probably not accurate either.

Dems have a huge problem with the tax bill. They were so loudly and strongly against it that its success/popularity is really hurting them because voters couldn't avoid seeing their opposition to it.

It really shows how much they are prisoners of their own most radical supporters, and the rabid anti-Trumpers. Some of those Democrats had to realize that at least in the short term, that bill was going to be a huge success. They knew it, yet their party's internal dynamics forced them to oppose it anyway. That may be what saves the House for the GOP in November.

Those that said that speech made them feel scared or angry need to seriously consider if they are living in the right country. They would likely be far happier somewhere else.

They don’t want the border secured, most of the illegal drugs...yes even opioids at this point are coming across this border. They know that, don’t want anything done about that. Many of the addicts are using RX drugs but at some point they run out of that option and have to go for drugs illegally smuggled in.

I have a hunch it was already higher than reported, and this should indeed give it a bump. Not sure it will be accurately reported though.

If the southern border were sealed, there is still one more land border and two sea borders. Human trafficking will doubtless severely dwindle. What happens from sea to shining sea is a different matter.

Drug abuse is a symptom. Trump might have had room to be even wiser, although it would have been a slap to Democrats. What’s wrong, Rats, that this utopia you’ve given us has people gulping pills and snorting and shooting stuff to escape from it?

Not staggering to me, or anyone else who ever attended a Trump rally...

I sort of feel like it's the WWII post-war de-mobilization period. A great national purpose over, and millions at a loss of what to do. Granted, this conflict lasted 28 years. A long time, yes, but nothing compared to the 70+ years the Russians endured. And yet, after the fall of the USSR, think how many people had difficulty letting go of the past and re-focusing on the future?

It sort of seems like FR has lost it's purpose. There are still people getting worked up over issues that are essentially moot. Sure, mop up operations are still on going, but it's over; time to move on. If people cannot let go, and still need a place to complain, then sure, FR is as good as any. But, why shouldn't it too focus on the future?

The smart money (and smart, balanced people) know the score. Technology and innovation drive economic growth. (I don't mean just hi-tech - it can be anything from mining coal, building/driving cars to medical advances, etc.) Both need a stable, open economic system that encourages capital investment and provides strong legal protections for private property.

The USA has historically provided the best venue for these kinds of activities. Even muffled and suppressed, the country still managed to eek out 1-2% growth. But in a wide open period, that growth can move to 4%+. So, what we're seeing here is the rubber band effect where the country is snapping back to the 'norm'. All the new factory construction will drive something like a 10x multiplier effect - all in Trump states - before product even starts to move.

FR is self selecting - but the people who post the most articles seem to have a major Eeyore malady, so we get a skewed perspective vs what is actually trending. And what is actually occurring are people are going to work, they're buying homes, they're able to support their families, and they're interested in being happy.

It is true they have and will always figure out ways...but this border being open has led to it being much easier to bring in larger quantities. I have actually watched the drug crisis grow as this border became more and more open.

Cartel smuggling of opioids has become so obvious, the dims are saying it has increased under President Trump as if it is one more thing to blame on him. What has increased is the amount being caught at or near the border, when before most of it was just going through.

No one thing will solve the current drug crisis, just as no one thing will solve all the border issues. It will take several steps to help with each problem. Securing this border is a large and necessary step toward solving both issues though.

From what I know about interdiction success rates (drugs are maddeningly mobile), a general increase in national optimism could well cut drug abuse better than interdiction as we know it can.

I just want to add the previous administration left the border wide open for illegal drugs to pour in; yet they cracked down on doctors to the point they are afraid/reluctant to prescribe pain meds. Many of the addict stories begin with people who had real medical issues and were and are dealing with intense pain. When turned away by doctors they are forced to go to the street drugs.

I am not saying doctors don’t need to be wary of drug seekers, they always have had to deal with them. Doctors should not be afraid to prescribe pain meds to patients who actually need them, and of course monitor those patients closely.

I believe that too. I do see a pick up in optimism happening in this country. The Democrats have been and are the party of gloom and doom, seeing only the worst. I have always been an optimist and see the good, I do see the bad as well but that makes me want to find real ways to deal with it.

Those that are such pessimists about this country, blame the country for all the problems- they are the same that are the most angry about what President Trump stands for. It is as though they don’t want problems solved, or even improved. They just want to use the problems to make promises to gather more voters.

Not sure how their gloom and doom politics will play out as more people have more and more reasons to be optimistic.

A lot of factors come into confluence to create trouble.

It just seems sad that a doctor can’t know things about a patient that one of the patient’s friends meeting with the patient for lunch finds obvious.

I’m currently trying to talk a very well intended fellow I know out of burning himself out with the aid of pills. He thinks he has to be the big macho, to manage everything, and I’ve been pressing him to delegate some of it to others, like his own family. Some of these folks are just in the dark. “Friends don’t let friends burn themselves out with pills” might do as much good as “Friends don’t let friends drive drunk.”

Some people can be helped and some cannot. I had to learn that the hard way trying to help alcoholics. The desire and will to get better has to be there inside them. If that is not there, nothing you do will make any real difference in their life.

Since when has the term ‘scared’ been used to describe a SOTU reaction?
