Excellent point, that may be the most likely alternative to “accident”.... In that case it is a kind of cover-up, but not the kind the conspiracy claims are pointing toward.

I still don’t think that Hamas would miss an opportunity to try to blame Israel (and rally the raging Palis against the Jews) unless there was no way they would be able to get even their own kind to buy that. Which implies it was indeed “self” inflicted, whether by accident or suicide, and word was already leaking out.

Also, some have mentioned that he was among the main contacts between Hamas and Iran, so that could be fodder for conspiracy.

Qatar had reps in D.C. yesterday, signing new accords. Some have speculated that they are buckling under Saudi pressure, and cutting funding to the Muslim Brotherhood (of which Hamas is a local franchise). If Hamas has lost Saudi and Qatari funding, Iran (and Turkey) would likely be asked to make up the shortfall, so this would be an inopportune time for Hamas to lose their Iran guy.
