Vladimir Putin today vowed to create a son of Concordski - a jinxed Soviet airliner now in the scrapyard - to fly VIPs around the world.
He is basing his ambitious vision of new luxury passenger high speed jet on the fearsome Tu-160 nuclear bomber which sends shivers throughout the West.
The Kremlin leader wants a civilian version of the long range strategic bomber to earn roubles to support the low-flying Russian economy.
The Tu-144, nicknamed Concordski and made by Tupolev, became a laughing stock in the Soviet era, and never rivalled the Anglo-French Concorde which had a successful lifespan of almost a quart of a century.
'The Tu-144 was out of production because a ticket cost an average salary in the country,' said Putin referring to the problems of making the plane a viable option in the communist era.
He neglected to mention the technical problems on designs stolen by KGB spies from the West.
'There is a different situation now,' he explained. Large companies have emerged that could use the jet.'
He suggested it would be quicker to fly on his planned son-of-Concordski from Russia to the US than to cross his vast country.

[the fearsome Tu-160 nuclear bomber which sends shivers throughout the West]
I believe we’ll be able to bring those boys down, if need be.
The B-1-ski
“Fearsome.”
Won’t be practical. First of all it is not capable to supercruise and the way swing wings designed it is hard to imagine where to put a passenger cabin unless it would be two small cabins in the bomb bays. The cost and availability vs maintenance time is another issue.
If you’re looking for a really fast business jet Mig-31 would be easier conversion. Although not without its issues.
Elecrion time
That looks a bit like a B1-B...
Another creation by that famous Russian inventor, Reguspatoff.
It will probably bomb.
Back in the 70’s I recall a TU-144 that literally snapped in two during its flight at the Paris airshow, killing all aboard.. Pilot banked too hard and the aircraft couldn’t handle the stresses.
Russians should be free to help themselves and their country through increased opportunity via free market capitalism. Let the people work for themselves, get the government off their backs and the economy would boom.
A Mirage III was very close and may have caused an emergency maneuver when the pilot was surprised by the fighter jet nearby that wasn’t on the schedule. It was denied that it was there, but later admitted.
The French had him there to sneak an in-flight closer look and take photos.
But Bob Hoover said he chalked it up to natural competition with the British/French Concorde.
What is rarely ever mentioned is that the sharp maneuver that caused it to snap was done in order to prevent a mid-air collision with a French Air Force Mirage fighter jet that was shadowing it.
Exactly. But what the heck: if youre gonna copy, copy the best!
