An online petition to include pet food in SNAP benefits is getting a lot of traction. The petition on Care2 has more than 88,500 supports as of Monday morning. According to the website, the petition was created by Edward B. Johnston Jr., who wrote that he’s been on SNAP benefits for a few months and hasn’t been able to feed his dog due to government regulations.

My wife got our late dog from a rescue shelter when he was about 9 months old. She took him to the vet for a more thorough exam and the vet told her that he had an auto-immune disease that was responsible for the flaking skin on his nose and that he would not live very long but prescribed canned and dry food to help the situation. The prescription food would not be in for a week and the vet said to just boil some cheap chicken breasts and white rice and chop the chicken and put it in the rice. So I did that and ended up eating some of it myself (with a little soy sauce). When the prescription food came in we gave him that for awhile and then I got fed up with the exhorbitant cost and started on the chicken and rice again. Anyway, he lived to about 16 years and the auto-immune symptoms went away after a year. So this dude can buy some cheap bulk chicken breasts and a big bag of white rice and his dog can eat on his master’s food stamp dime. End of story. Stop your whining.

Or he could buy a 10 lb. bag of chicken leg quarters at 59 cents a pound at Walmart and a sack of rice and cook for his dog. Use the broth from boiling the chicken to flavor the rice. Steam a few carrots and some green beans to add in and you got your dog fed for a couple of weeks.....

A better idea is to make EBT benefits come in the form of a big bag of nutritious kibble that is safe and healthy for both humans and animals.

Chicken leg quarters from Walmart will work. A little more work but dogs love them.

Pets need to get a job and earn their keep. No welfare for lazy pets. If you want your pet to be a drain on society then you pay for his food.

If you can’t feed yourself, and my tax dollars have to feed you...

You are too poor for a pet.

That’s crazy.

We can’t afford to eat out but I see big EBT accepted signs at restaurants. Welfare should be limited to two 6 month stints during a lifetime. After that, get a job like the rest of us.

I can’t afford to feed your dog either, but I will offer some advice. It rhymes with “chuck too”.

Given that we are a society that has payed people like me to, against our will, transport, on the taxpayer dime, emotional support cats to get fast food...ya, this makes total sense.

Someone else said it, but here goes. I can’t afford a pet but someone thinks I should pay for other people to have pets.

He CAN feed his dog on foodstamps, and he can feed it very well IF he’s willing to take a little time to cook for it. Cook the chicken (that you bought in bulk, and on sale). Use the broth to cook rice. Grind the chicken, grind canned vegall and some fruit. Mix in an egg and some dry powdered milk, and a bit of vegetable oil. Mix well. Chill, bag and put some in the freezer so it’s always fresh. Make a bunch.

Furthermore, he can go to the church pantrys, can apply for commodities and get a lot of items that can go into making a good dog food, for free, such as rice and canned veg/fruit, dry milk. Some church pantrys actually do have some dog
food ready made, to give out, as well.

I don’t know why the man is on FS, maybe he’s disabled, but when you are disabled and you have a service dog, that dog is a medical device that requires upkeep such as innoculations, health checks, licensing and sometimes equipment. The dog needs his fuel just like your car does, and sometimes it has medical needs as well just like any medical device may need repair, maintenance and upkeep. Sometimes they even need other equipment in order to do their jobs such as harnesses, collars, pulling equipment, leashes or even muzzels so it can’t be accused of wrong doing(for it’s own protection depending on the breed).

If you travel, in some cases you have to pay a fee for that animal to accompany you. Well, when my mother flew by plane, she had to purchase a special oxygen delivery system to take on board with her.

Food stamps for a single individual aren’t very much. It’s Dependant upon many factors such as your rent/utilities etc and what percentage of your monthly income goes to pay these things.

Not everybody gets ‘’free’’ rent. Not everybody gets a subsidy to reduce rent. Some of us actually do our level best to pay our own way in as much as is possible, and if we can’t, we do without. Doing without means even doing without hair spray or lipstick so we can purchase things like soap, deodorant, shampoo and toilet paper. There is ZERO left over at the end of the day. In some cases, some of those items can be supplied by church pantry type places as well.

It totally sucks when you know what it’s like to live decently enough to be able to meet your basic needs on your own, to get older, disabled, and then loose your life’s partner and have to live on an income of LESS than minimum wage after taxes. And then to hear freepers in their haughty, know it all ‘voices’ accuse the poorest of the poor of being able to afford steak...we’re lucky we can afford eggs and nasty chicken hotdogs.

Not everybody made stupid decisions early on. Each had of cards dealt in life is utilized as well as it can be, and not all hands are royal strait flushes. Life is a gamble, and isn’t always fair. Sometimes is down right horrid and impossible, yet people smile their way through and plow ahead any way doing the best they can with what they have.

Yes, people who fake it and manipulate the system DO exist, but they aren’t very many. There are guide lines and if you don’t meet them, you get NADA. And if you do get something, you’d better be able to prove yourself or else you are going to prison for a long time. At the least, you will be blacklisted so if you ever end up in a legitimately bad situation, you’re screwed.

And yes, I do remember when my poor hard working husband who put in 12 hours a day and came home with raw, peeling skin from sweat, couldn’t afford a steak while some illegal family was clearing the meat counter of ribsteaks with foodstamp card in hand...I was resentful. I stood there and cried for my husband.

I remembered the day when you could buy a roast cheaper than ground meat pound for pound. And that changed. Suddenly a cheap roast cost more per pound than fatty ground beef...

The last few decades of the globalist agenda has harmed a LOT of us. It killed our 401k’s, left us without good jobs and benefits in the primes of our lives. Some of us were able to find a better stash of cheese, some not. It was the luck of the draw.

Some of us became ill at that time, the time when we needed to be plugging our retirement stashes. Instead, we had to drain the stash...what was left of it, just to make it from one day to the next. I watched my own kids do without in their youth so that they’d have something to rest on in their old age. Obama’s policies drained it. Killed it. And if my daughter hadn’t taken my advice, not a single penny would have been left. As it was, all that was left was the salary of a month and a half out of a year’s worth of income.

Thankfully, they were young enough to try again, but we weren’t.

Be careful of criticizing those who are alive because of their needs being met as a result of your taxes. Thank God instead that you had the resources to be a blessing in the lives of those who could not and cannot help themselves.

Forgive me please for climbing on the soap box, but sometimes folks who hang out in place dedicated to guns, God and Country, need also to be reminded that their blessings come from God, not their own handiwork. You were blessed with a decent job, home, family, and you paid big taxes to prove it. God made that possible for you...why? Not because YOU’re wonderful, and not so you can boast against those in need, but to show the world who God is, and who you are.

Boasting of your wonderfulness compared to the ‘gibs me dats’ that tend to get lumped together, shows us how wonderful you AREN’T. It makes it look like you’d let your needy mother eat from a pizzahut garbage bin rather than give her $20 to eat fresh from the menu. Because she might be a big, bad drug addict or something horrible.

Please, think outside of yourselves. Doing so makes the world a better place.

To clarify: it was the cat, not the owner, that “needed” fast food.

You can definately feed your own dog- There is no government regulation to prevent any person in the USA from feeding their dog.

YOU apparently want to purchase your dog food with your SNAP benefits. That is beyond selfish.

I have had dogs all of my life. I am now 78, and altho I qualify for food stamps, I do not get them. I feed my dog (s) on my own with my Soc Sec $$$$$.

YOUR apparent disconnect from what these benefits are supposed to be used for is mind-boggling.

Great idea.

Sell your pets before you get food stamps.

If you can’t afford to feed yourself, don’t come to us for help while you’re still feeding your pets.
