British Tourists flock to Jamaica, where they tend to stay in fenced in tourist hotels that are off limits to most locals. Now they being told to stay in their rooms.

The reason: sky-high murder rates and a recent spate of killings.

From mirror.co.uk:

British holidaymakers in Jamaica have been told to stay in their resorts by the Foreign Office after a state of emergency was declared following a series of shootings.

Troops have been put on the streets following the killings in Montego Bay, which is popular with tourists.

It follows a series of shootings including a driveby shooting which killed one person, and the shooting of another four times on a roundabout near to the main airport Sansgster international on Tuesday.

The country's Prime Minister issued a State of Emergency and put security services and troops on the street to tackle the gunmen after a record 335 murders last year in the area.

He has now ordered a massive house-to-house search in the St. John's area for the gunmen and tourists are being tole to stay in their hotel rooms.

The 2017 murder rate for Jamaica was 42.6 per 100,000 population, one of the highest in the world. It is not as high as Baltimore, Maryland, where the rate reached 55.8 in 2017. Many attribute the Baltimore murder rate to a lack of police presence. Police drastically reduced their activities after several officers were charged in the 2015 death of Freddie Gray. The officers were eventually found not guilty of all charges.

In the article in the Mirror, this excuse is given:

In David Kopel’s 1992 book “The Samurai, The Mountie, and The Cowboy”, he has a chapter devoted to Jamaica and it’s ban on civilian firearms ownership since the mid 1970s accompanied with among the highest violent crime rates in the Western world. A not particularly pleasant portrait of poverty and political corruption accompanied with drug related violence, with a quote of “I shot the sheriff but I did not shot no deputy” (from the Bob Marley composed song) heading the start of the chapter.

I heard that Conan plans to vacation in Johannesburg, South Africa first (maybe with a side trip to Mogadishu, Somalia), then Jamaica.

I thought Ganja was supposed to make you mellow.

Certainly. That's why they get you stoned before they rob you. Less resistance that way.

I wouldn’t go to Jamaica on purpose but then I would say the same for Chiraq, Detroitistan, Dayton, or Baltimore. I find many foreigners to be blissfully naive about their personal safety in the US. I believe I am safer in Moscow than most large US cities. We live in a violent country. And the Carib is about the same.

Granted it’s a high murder rate, but are those being murdered locals or tourists? Baltimore, Detroit, Chicago all have high murder rates, but theyre mostly killing each other.

The murder rate in Jamaica is so high that the authorities tells tourists to stay in their hotel rooms for their safety.

What do democRAT leaders in Baltimore, which has a higher murder rate than Jamaica, tell their residents to do? Stay in their homes?

Just wonderin'....

All the good Jamaicans went to Britain in the 50s and 60s.

Yup. A nation never fully recovers from rule by a Socialist government.

The title is way too accusatory. Isn’t it alleged murders, supposed murders? Do we really know there are murders, it’s all just bias...
