How about some Swiss chocolate?

Wheel of Fortune has been in Switzerland this week. I’m too old to go but it seems like a beautiful charming country. Hope Muslims haven’t ruined too much of it.

Yeah, thanks to banking and gold. It is a beautiful country, almost as nice as Austria.

I’ve often wondered why no aggressive nation ever attacks Switzerland?

Carrot and stick.

In WW2, there is evidence the Swiss gave tribute, essentially.

Also, Swiss citizens were armed & trained -- not to the point where they could defeat a determined invasion by a large German force in WW2, but, they could make an invasion and occupation VERY costly: in effect, "not worth it". They were aided in this by the rugged terrain, making the German's advantages in military mechanism less effective.

500 years ago, Machiavelli wrote that the Swiss were both the most armed and the most free people in Europe.

They admirably stayed out of the union and the Euro. Not a fan of their referendum style of self governance, or mandatory draft. But the are an armed neautrality and take guns pretty seriously.

We went there way back I think in 2005. Charming. High gun ownership. I remember seeing women and men with machine guns in the airport. Made me feel safe. A McDonalds meal will cost you about $25 though. Hotel and boarding fees were not out of the ordinary for a European country. Just very expensive to eat there.

The Nazis would have been bogged down for weeks or months, which is why they avoided Switzerland. They are fairly well armed and determined to keep invaders out. In the future it is hard to imagine however Switzerland remaining as a beacon of Freedom in the middle of a caliphate that runs from Spain to Germany.

“I’ve often wondered why no aggressive nation ever attacks Switzerland?”

Oft repeated story of an exchange that supposedly happened prior to WW I.
“The Kaiser asked a Swiss militiaman: ‘You are 500,000 and you shoot well, but if we attack with 1,000,000 men what will you do?’ The soldier replied: ‘We will shoot twice and go home.’”

I lived in a small Swiss village in 2008-09. My wife and I went for a walk one day and rounding a hill a short distance from our house we saw targets on the hill opposite us. Then we saw a bunker just above us - it was a shooting range over the little valley we were walking through, the pavement well below the line of fire. Yes, they take their guns seriously and do train.
