Senate Minority Whip Dick Durbin, D-Ill., a key senator in the talks to find an immigration deal, came out against President Trump's proposal for a grand bargain, in large part because it would curb legal immigration.
"Dreamers should not be held hostage to President Trump's crusade to tear families apart and waste billions of American tax dollars on an ineffective wall," Durbin said in a statement.
Trump's plan would put 1.8 million immigrants who came to the U.S. illegally as children on a decade-long path to citizenship. But that comes at a high price for Democrats, as he also wants $25 billion for a border wall and other security measures.
Trump also wants to end chain migration, the process by which immigrants can get their extended family members to America, and also wants to end the diversity visa lottery.
Durbin said that's all too much to ask.
"The White House claims to be compromising because the President now agrees with the overwhelming majority of Americans that Dreamers should have a pathway to citizenship," he said. "But his plan would put the administration's entire hardline immigration agenda including massive cuts to legal immigration on the backs of these young people."
Durbin also seemed to dismiss Trump's plan by saying senators from both parties are still working on their own proposal. Many progressive groups also came out against Trump's plan Thursday night.
However, Republicans have stressed that Congress needs to find a solution that Trump can also support, not just one that can survive a close Senate vote.
Trump knew the Dems would reject it.
What does that even mean?
How about we give Durbin, Schumer, and Pelosi to the “Dreamers”.... to take with them, back to wherever they came from!!
I am shocked that they rejected it. Even now I suspect they will change their minds. But if they dont then that basically means that a deal on DACA is dead.
Yo Dick, it’s as good as it’s gonna get. That I can tell you.
And it makes the Democrats look bad.
Dems never want to end their holy grail chain migration..its all about inviting not only the roaches, but the roaches friends, family, the family members pets, anyone that can come here and vote Democrat
Dick Durbin: Trump holding Dreamers ‘hostage’
Little Dick Durbin flapping his yap. What happened to lying Schmuck Schumer? What a colossal couple of bullshit artist losers.
Correct.
Let the deportations begin..........
We are not beginning to realize that the Democrats have planned all along to hijack the vote and take over the country. They will fight to the finish over that wall because that is the ONLY place where they are going to get enough ignorant people to vote them into office in perpetuity.
Durban isn’t going to get a better deal. Both sides are going to be pissed off if there is a true compromise.
Levin was complaining about Trump on this. Levin doesnt understand Trumps methods. He knew Turban would reject this. All his callers who he let through were parroting Levin, who doesnt understand Trump
Donald? That you?
Trump made a CREDIBLE offer - the Dems rejected it out of hand...and so when the media starts the sob stories about all the Nobel-winning Dreamers facing deportation, most Americans will NOT be blaming Trump.
Well, IMHO, having their asses “held hostage” sure beats being deported back to their homes or being sentenced to prison for violating U.S. laws. Little Dick needs to get himself a Coke and try to lighten up a bit. He needs to remember, THESE DACAS ARE NOT U.S. CITIZENS. They are foreign invaders.
Dick, you have the opportunity to open your home to dreamers just like Schumer did. Show us your absolute and infinite compassion. Talk about holding hostages. It is you Dick.
Good, in March deport them all and their criminal illegal parents. Contract a couple of cruise ships and take them home. Empty the pool first and lock up the liqueur.
Counter offer Durbin? ‘We want everything we wanted 9 years ago but we didn’t want to get voted out of office even faster than we were by the public.’ is my guess.
