Senate Minority Whip Dick Durbin, D-Ill., a key senator in the talks to find an immigration deal, came out against President Trump's proposal for a grand bargain, in large part because it would curb legal immigration.
"Dreamers should not be held hostage to President Trump's crusade to tear families apart and waste billions of American tax dollars on an ineffective wall," Durbin said in a statement.
Trump's plan would put 1.8 million immigrants who came to the U.S. illegally as children on a decade-long path to citizenship. But that comes at a high price for Democrats, as he also wants $25 billion for a border wall and other security measures.
Trump also wants to end chain migration, the process by which immigrants can get their extended family members to America, and also wants to end the diversity visa lottery.
Durbin said that's all too much to ask.
"The White House claims to be compromising because the President now agrees with the overwhelming majority of Americans that Dreamers should have a pathway to citizenship," he said. "But his plan would put the administration's entire hardline immigration agenda including massive cuts to legal immigration on the backs of these young people."
Durbin also seemed to dismiss Trump's plan by saying senators from both parties are still working on their own proposal. Many progressive groups also came out against Trump's plan Thursday night.
However, Republicans have stressed that Congress needs to find a solution that Trump can also support, not just one that can survive a close Senate vote.
Levin has been one of Trumps biggest defenders, unless Trump pushes something Levin doesnt support like amnesty for illegals. Funny thing is, Trump ran AGAINST AMNESTY!
[With the minor exception of wanting Hillary as president...]
Thats a lie. Levin voted for Trump and endorsed Trump over Hillary.
We need e-verify. Why is it not in the bill?
Critique?
I correctly chose the word ‘denigrate’ to describe what Levin was doing.
There are some so blindly in love with Levin they can’t see clearly.
“Hes been here for almost 40 years, and I still can only understand a fraction of his speech as his accent is so very broad.”
This is the kind of immigrant we want? I used to be mistaken for Japanese over the phone, and I was only there 20 years.
I know who Levin is and Im perfectly ok with who he is. Im ok with him yes critiquing our President. I know that may hurt some feelings around here but Levin calls it as he sees it. Sometimes he is right and sometimes he is wrong. He is human. Did you know our President gets things wrong too?
I made no statement of my opinion of his value.
As a midwesterner raised by a mother who lived in Manhattan for ten years, my accent can be hard to place. But how incredibly exciting to have that opportunity to live in Japan. Your viewpoint must have been opened enormously by adjusting to multiple cultures.
You are either an idiot or a troll Noob. I suggest you read The Art of the Deal and relax.
Hey, Dick, glad you rejected Trump’s offer. But maybe you don’t understand that this was the best offer you’ll ever get. It’ll only get worse (for you - but better for America). Just like Trump wouldn’t talk about DACA once you morons closed the government last week, once you turn this down officially (i.e. let March 6 come and go without any DACA legislation), the deportations will start. It won’t be long before you come to Trump, BEGGING him to agree to the deal you just rejected...at which point he’ll say, “Well, boys and girls, you had your chance to get that deal, and you blew it BIGLY. Now if you want a deal, I’ve got a couple of other things that I’d like tossed into the mix - starting with eliminating birthright citizenship. Take it ALL, or leave it - but if you leave it, it’ll just get worse for you again. Oh, and around the end of June there won’t be any more talking, we’ll be concentrating on November, while still deporting more illegals every day.”
I’m guessing that Dick didn’t have anyone like Trump to deal with back in Shitcago, because he’s really screwed the pooch twice in the last couple of weeks.
“I made no statement of my opinion of his value.”
I didn’t say you did.
“Your viewpoint must have been opened enormously by adjusting to multiple cultures.”
G.K. Chesterton said that the purpose of an open mind is to close it, eventually, on the truth.
My feelings never get hurt over things people say about Trump or even Levin.
Those words typically reveal more about the speaker than the object.
As a result, instead of wishing Levin was Press Secretary, “Get off the phone you idiot”, which would have been incredibly exciting, I no longer even listen to him for a minute.
He turned into an idiot.
Durbin as usual has everything backwards. He and the other Dims in Congress have been holding true immigration reform hostage to amnesty for illegals for more than a decade.
Correct! That is indeed the Democrats central plan, to flood the country with reliable D voters.
And not only via chain migration but also the diversity visa lottery program are the main sources of problems, especially the latter when it comes to homegrown terrorists.
This is a brilliant move by Trump (and I dont say that often) as it effectively divorces the relatively popular issue (DACA) from the unpopular (chain migration and visa lottery). Now the hard left Democrat agenda is in full display for the entire country, and if the Dims continue to insist on those UNpopular programs, they will suffer at the polls.
are you saying there are not 11 RINO republicans in the Senate that would vote for any clean Daca? Are you kidding? I assure you it will pass easy .
“We need e-verify. Why is it not in the bill?”
Asshole ‘business leaders’. Sadly their is still a tiny bit of “e” in Trump’s version of the GOP (as in “GOPe”)...but he’s still damn good.
... Trump will use this to his advantage.
I totally agree. Some peeps on our side got their panties in a wad but he never intended that plan to go through. What are they going to do shut the government down again? The white house has offered a plan that is generous beyond even what his base would like. Democrats rather than take it now are placing themselves once again on the extreme left. They don’t even realize what they are doing. They are alienating real Americans for the sake of foreign nationals. They may continue to lose states like MI, WI, PA and even MN. I’ve seen some polling out of MN that shows their support for the President having grown since he was elected.
