I knew a co-worker at a former job who gave bone marrow.

Apparently you can't give it willy-nilly: the immune system of the donor must closely match that of the receiver, or the bone marrow thinks *it* is the immune system, and starts attacking the patient.

And that is part of the reason it is so expensive -- a LOT of work has to be done to make sure you can use it.
