Why Conservatives Must Support '12 Strong' (or Stop Complaining)
newsbusters.org ^ | 1/20/2018 | Christian Toto

Conservatives constantly complain about Hollywood … often for very good reasons.

The industry’s voice is almost uniformly liberal. Major stars (like Amy Schumer and Michael Shannon) talk down to Red State denizens in the ugliest ways possible. Films often mock or denigrate the U.S. Military (think Redacted for a glaring Exhibit A).

Liberal messages abound in many films and TV shows. Consider the “resistance” themes lurking within Supergirl and Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Sites like NewsBusters cover this terrain aggressively. Tinsel Town gives the site’s writers plenty of fodder.

Hollywood also hasn’t captured the heroism displayed by U.S. troops in Afghanistan.

Enter 12 Strong.

The Jan. 19 release tells the amazing true story of the Horse Soldiers. These brave Green Berets were the first U.S. boots on the ground in war-torn Afghanistan after terrorists killed 3,000-plus Americans on Sept 11, 2001.

Modern day heroes Major Mark Nutsch and Chief Warrant Officer Robert Pennington are played by Chris Hemsworth and Michael Shannon, respectively. Some of the facts have been changed for dramatic purposes (including the aforementioned heroes’ names). The thrust of the mission remains accurate and compelling.

The film should be red meat to conservatives. It’s patriotic and lacks the kind of pearl clutching seen in some war movies. The Taliban is depicted in the cruelest way possible, reflecting the truth behind the barbaric group. It’s also apolitical to the core.

Screw Hollywood!

GREAT, everyone should see it, it shows the Tals kill three little girls mother in front of them because she taught them to read.

Oldest Daughter got the 98 Saturn a few years back.

She’s now got the 2002 (?) CRV.

It’s SOP in the family that we don’t trade in our cars and we don’t buy new.

The kids get our old cars and drive them until the car dies.

That’s all about to come to an end because we now have three kids with a driver’s license and we don’t go through cars that fast.

My 94 Chevy Pickup is still going strong.

Good movie or not, conservatives generally don’t like being told what they “must” do.

Any illusions about his intelligence and judgment are quickly dispelled by the bomb “Take Shelter,” two hours of my life poorly spent.

Yep. Well it is probably significant that it did not play anywhere in Long Island for very long. Prob so for other lib bastions

It went under radar

And it’s not a movie that appeals to girls (women). I’m a girl and i think this movie is all boy which is why i like it but most girls say oh i wish everyone. Would stop fighting

I never saw the movie, but did see the trailer. It looked like a pretty bad movie.

I have lab work and a medical appointment at the VA on Tuesday too. See you there. :-)

But I heard somewhere where that there is a government shutdown. If that's true, will the VA be open?

It's hard to tell that the federal government isn't open it is or not.

Which tells me that closing down non-essential government departments and employees is not a bad thing.

Let's close 'em down more often.

But the movie, 12 Strong, is a gem in the desert of what Hollywood has put out this last year.

Thanks for the link. I will read it later today.

But the second part of your comment was Greek to me. I was Air Force. Retired thirty years ago. I know nothing of what that you wrote.

The movie was/is about ODA 595.

The two Special Forces Teams that infiled were ODA 595 in the northern part of the country to work with the Northern Alliance and ODA 555 in the eastern part of the country.

You can tell “who” the team is by the numbers.

The first 5 is 5th SFG(A), the 9 is Company C/3rd Battalion and the last 5 is the Team number in that company. There are 1 through 6. Dive teams end in 5 so both 555 and 595 are Dive Teams.

That was the old numbering system before the 4th Bn was brought on board.

“...but what’s “conservative” about endless war ... we’ve blown trillions of tax dollars on mideast wars. ... stop with the unnecessary wars. Our soldiers should be deployed to protect our own borders, not Agghanistans or Syrias”

Incomplete analysis. Also ignores the historical record. Borders on megalomania: assumes that the United States is out there all alone, with no other entities involved - not even enemies. Stop navel-gazing.

Would the Middle East be a peaceful paradise without American intervention? Not very likely. Claiming any different is to bow to Michael Moore.

The nation is in peril because of brainless refusal to spend adequately on the military. Far more significant are the transfer payments to individuals. It’s nice to send out the Social Security checks, but it just won’t matter if our military establishment comes up short.

And the choice is not “war” or “peace.” If we spend properly, train accordingly, and demonstrate our resolve, we may intimidate a potential enemy. Academics prettied up this concept by labeling it “deterrence” but it does work. It’s about the only timeless truth there is; the key is making sure the adversary believes our threat to strike. It’s meaning less and less, with conservatives and Left/Progressives wailing and handwringing over the cost and the sacrifice, no matter the situation.

Asserting the “World War One was handled badly, therefore we should never have bothered” is also an incomplete and erroneous notion. Substitute Vietnam, or Korea, OEF, OIF, you name it; saying “we should not have gotten into it” conveys nothing about the strategic merits of this or that particular conflict. All it does is reveal to adversaries real or potential that Americans are wimps with short attention spans ... make it tough on them long enough and they’ll quit.

Trump also says our invasion of Iraq was a colossal blunder. Cost trillions. Set the Mideast on fire. He’s the first and only GOP presidential candidate who was courageous enough to speak this truth. It’s why neocons like Bill Kristo HATE Trump. He spoke the truth about their war

I like Agents of SHIELD. Don’t think it is liberal. If anything, the resistance is to Hydra, an entity embedded inside a governing body manipulating and scheming. I consider it Deep State.

When Hydra breaks out and destroys SHIELD, Coulson slowly works to destroy it. This is what Trump is doing now.

LOL! I know the actors are all swell little Leftists who would pitch a crying meltdown with the association, but it’s my take.

They’re extremely comfortable, secure and sturdy.

They remind me of the McClellan saddles used in the civil war.
