Berlin must work with Paris to improve and deepen the European Union, German Foreign Minister Sigmar Gabriel urged as his Social Democrats weigh renewing a coalition with Chancellor Angela Merkel.

France and Germany, once bitter enemies, “have a joint responsibility to develop all of Europe further,” he told AFP, highlighting “reform of the economic and monetary union” as a top priority.

Historically, the two countries have been the powerhouse of the economic integration project that became the European Union; but French President Emmanuel Macron’s plans to shore up the 19-nation euro single currency area and deepen European integration are on hold while Chancellor Angela Merkel — cautiously in favor of the scheme — battles to form a government. […]

“We have to grasp the historic opportunity that we have with Macron, a convinced European,” Gabriel insisted, “otherwise one day the EU will only exist on paper.” …

Instead of going further down the path of making Merkel Fuhrer of Europe, it will be better to dissolve the European Union, and restore the sovereignty of European countries.

Because when the EU goes bust, Germany doesn’t want to be left holding the bag.

The EU isn‘t going bust. Positive balance of trade, little debt, and high savings rate

If the EU is going bust then why has Euro risen from 88 cents to $1.20 ?

Are we simply going bust faster than the Euros ?

European debt crisis: It's not just Greece that's drowning in debt

I'm wondering if this is a big reason why the repatriation in the tax bill is a one time deal.

Germany is not the USA. They know what they’re doing when it comes to the EU; even more than Obama, they like the “beneficial crisis” in order to bully others into accepting their “solution”.

He is correct.

However the development path that weakens and infact destroys Europe is counterproductive. The inherent German guilt plus the Slavic dilution of the German gene pool mean that the resulting Europe will not have the stamina to resist the already overwhelming assault by Islam.

What, the Serbians have no will to resist Islam? or the Poles, or Czechs, or Croats? I do not see any Islamic incursion into Slavic countries.

PS. Do you know what “develop Europe further” means? The “European project” was always an anti-USA project right from its beginnings in the 1950s.

It is a matter of the view point.

Taken from the American side, you are correct.

Taken from the Euro side, he is correct. Although correct, the probability of the unification he desires seems improbable.

A united Europe is needed to be competitive against not only America but especially China. The question becomes what is Europe? Given the problems you noted, the Balkans or at least some of the Balkans can be omitted.

If Europe becomes Spain Portugal, France, Germany and Italy, That would be a commercial force to be reckoned with.

However, there is not the will. Before there can be a uniting, Europe eill be lost to Islam.
