MOSCOW - Even thermometers can't keep up with the plunging temperatures in Russia's remote Yakutia region, which hit minus 67 degrees Celsius (minus 88.6 degrees Fahrenheit) in some areas Tuesday.
In Yakutia - a region of 1 million people about 3,300 miles (5,300 kilometers) east of Moscow - students routinely go to school even in minus 40 degrees. But school was canceled Tuesday throughout the region and police ordered parents to keep their children inside.
Over the weekend, two men froze to death when they tried to walk to a nearby farm after their car broke down. Three other men with them survived because they were wearing warmer clothes, investigators reported.
But the press office for Yakutia's governor said Tuesday that all households and businesses in the region have working central heating and access to backup power generators.
Residents of Yakutia are no strangers to cold weather and this week's cold spell was not even dominating local news headlines Tuesday.
But some media outlets published cold-weather selfies and stories about stunts in the extreme cold. Women posted pictures of their frozen eyelashes, while YakutiaMedia published a picture of Chinese students who got undressed to take a plunge in a thermal spring.

I’m thinking we need to Locke this thread from further posts...
In Russia, the ice melts you.
Been there, done that. The big chamber can go up to 165 degrees.
The McKinley Climatic Laboratory was the brainchild of US Army Air Corps Colonel Ashely McKinley. He had been in command of cold weather operations in Alaska. He was transferred to Florida to oversee the design and construction.
The WWII lend-lease of aircraft to the Soviet Union showed the need for planes to operate in extreme cold.
Not sure why this is that big a deal. In January 2009 it was -80°F in Tok, AK, and -62 in Fairbanks.
My wife who was an AF brat in both Anchorage and Fairbanks in the early 60’s. said they played outside at school until it got below -20. And they weren’t allowed to wear slacks to school until it went below -10.
And you are right....
Do some MTN biking these days....although stayed in today. Supposed to be 40's-50's in a couple days.....
One of the greatest cross country skiing scenes I ever saw involved a really good skier coming in from a five mile trail. It was about ten degrees F out and a great, clear day. He came charging into the parking lot wearing no more than a sweater and an under shirt with skiing pants, not even enough to keep him warm indoors. He immediately opened his car’s trunk, stripped off his outer garments, got naked above the waist, and changed into normal street clothes. All the time he was so hot he was smoking with visible sweat condensation. That’s how to do it!!
Here in Rochester New York we got a taste of that with the -35 wind chill. I didn’t have a good pair of gloves so I tried snowblowing the driveway with a pair of socks over my hands to keep the wind off them - didn’t work well enough. Added second pair, and it worked.
Was just reading somewhere about one of the signs that you are in trouble from the cold is when you have been shivering and suddenly stop and the cold doesn’t seem to be effecting you at all.
Just a wee bit cold....
Bump for later.
It would not be possible for a female to conceive a child in those temperatures. The sperm would freeze before it reached the vital area. Hate to be crude but that is a fact. In this kind of weather, survival is the name of the game. Procreation can wait for warmer weather.
It would be impossible to have sex in that temperature.
Shrinkage!
I’ve been in 40 degrees below zero before. I can’t even fathom nearly 90 below.
When my German forebears left the Palatine region in 1709 it was said that it was so cold that spit would freeze before it hit the ground. Do not know what temp that would be.
How do you take a piss at those temps with out it breaking off?
What frustrates me is when there’s postings like this and a location is mentioned. Nobody (and I wish I could but my system doesn’t have the stuff to do it) seems to be interested in showing at least a generalized map of where the hell the place is at in this world.
By the time I walked to the car it was frozen solid at -40.
Yes we were grounded until it got warmer than -40F and honestly when we took off the temp was bouncing all over the place. Its crazy how unstable the temperature was.
In the insane world of liberals cold means warming?
