According to Sports Media Watch, all four games were down substantially in overnight ratings from the comparable window last January, and several of them hit their lowest mark in years. Saturday afternoons Falcons-Eagles game on NBC drew a 17.4 overnight rating, down 5 percent from last year and 12 percent from 2016. It was the lowest for the early Saturday time slot since 2009. The Patriots-Jaguars matchup Sunday night on CBS was the lowest-rated game of the weekend, with a 16.6 overnight. That was down 9 percent from last year and 18 percent from 2016 and was also the worst performance in that window since 2009. The Jaguars-Steelers contest in the early window Sunday on CBS pulled a 20.4 overnight, down 12 percent from 2016. (Last years game in that slot was moved to primetime due to weather.) That was the lowest mark in its window since 2002. Finally, the Vikings-Saints duel Sunday afternoon on Fox drew the best overnight rating of the weekend (21.8) but was still down 23 percent from last year and 17 percent from 2016.

“Too much emphasis on passing game.
Shortage of quarterback talent.”
Good list, but I’d also add that there is too much dependence on the QB position. If you have a good QB, you can win, if you don’t, you can’t. Long gone are the days when a team like the Vikings could go to the Super Bowl with Joe Kapp as the QB.
It’s almost as if a team must have a QB and the other players are simply an add on.
“Since Caldwell got fired by Detroit, thats why Lewis and Jackson are still coaches, and you know the reason why.”
I do. But if 1-31 can’t get a coach fired, then it’s irresponsible to hire someone you can’t fire.
Let that sink in, 1-31. I played some football in High School. I wasn’t all that good, and I was a lineman. I’d be willing to bet that I could coach a team to more than 1 win in 2 years.
Is football season still going?
got a problem with a article that can’t get basic facts correct....like the game between the “Jaguars and the Patriots”.
Too much fabric on cheerleaders’ uniforms.
The nfl with its degradation of the National Anthum and USA Flag, support of black lives matter and giving money to promote community activism can Kiss My A**. Bye, bye. Nice knowing you. They deserve to have many years of declining revenue. None from me. Unpatriotic felons (50% of the players are convicted felons).
You’d have to pay me to watch the NFL. Since that ain’t gonna happen, I won’t be watching.

Had a tough day at my job not complaining - I love my job but this brings a big ole smile to my face!
I agree completely.
Yes, replay is the dumbest thing ever added to sports.
Make the call and get moving. It’s a game, and the calls even out over time. It’s not that important who wins any particular game, even a Super Bowl.
+1
Excellent take on this mess!
I think the protests are the main reason for the drop in audience, but I bet QB situations could be a cause on some specific teams.
I wonder if anyone has compared the TV audience for Broncos games before and after Peyton Manning's retirement? I know, not being in NFL metro area, I've always picked teams to follow mostly based on favorite QBs.
I am with you. I enjoy the game and the unadulterated athleticism. When they are on their feet, they are beasts.
I still thrill to the skill. I was never that good but wished I was.
I don’t like the wussification, but the games can still be good.
In the playoffs, it’s the best of the year.
None, when the current TV contract revenue is based on ratings that were 23% higher last year. When the league budgets, team budgets and the salary caps are based on revenue, losing 23% will present huge problems. Everyone is gonna take a huge hit over the next couple years as revenues continue to fall.
Remember, the CBA only runs through 2020. Good luck with the NFL trying to get the players to take pay cuts if this thing doesn't turn around. Remember when the NHL cleaned up its house - cancelling contracts and restricting salaries?
I saw the most recent press conference. Basically, he said the staff made all the right calls but the players didn't execute. If I were a player on that team, I would kick his ass. The Steelers were simply OUT-COACHED, in all facets of the game. For him to lay it on the players? He's a frickin coward.
Correct me if I am wrong. But the famous star quarterbacks lost to the young nobodies. Falcon’s Ryan, Saint’s Breese, Steeler’s Rothschild, Seattle’s Wilson is out, Green Bay’s Rogers is out.
It is now Brady all alone against a bunch of nobodies.

“its worth noting that this weekends games featured matchups that might not have grabbed the casual fan at first glance. Even if Vikings-Saints was the greatest game ever (and it was pretty damn good), it wasnt going to beat last years Cowboys-Packers showdown. Falcons-Eagles was likewise less appealing than last years Falcons-Seahawks matchup. Some franchises and players are simply more appealing to the average American than others. When the Cowboys miss the playoffs but the Jaguars make it, or when Aaron Rodgers stays home but Case Keenum doesnt, or when Carson Wentz gets hurt and leaves us with Nick Foles, ratings are going to suffer a bit. That may not account for the entire drop, but it certainly explains some of it.”
The Kneelers wouldn’t understand that TV viewership drives their salaries. The advertisers pay the TV stations who pay the NFL, who share the revenues with the teams to provide the funding for salaries and bonuses. It’s all based on viewership. The companies that run ads on TV also hire players for endorsements based on viewership.
That money isn’t about to dry up too soon, but it is certainly going to shrink significantly. Boo hoo
