During his testimony before Congress in August, Fusion GPS founder Glenn Simpson said that the FBI had a source inside the Trump campaign who gave credence to the infamous dossier the company created for the Democrats.
He repeated the claim in a New York Times op-ed on January 2.
But today, Fusion GPS is retracting that statement, saying that Simpson "mischaracterized" the source.
Washington Times:
Then suddenly, as quick as the headlines went up, some one close to Fusion was waving off reporters. Mr. Simpsonhad mischaracterized the source. It was not some one on the Trump inside, but apparently an Australian diplomat
He was featured in a Dec. 30 New York Times story as the source who tipped off the FBI. Campaign volunteer George Papadopoulos told him over drinks that a Russian-linked professor knew of thousands of Hillary Clinton emails in the hands of Moscow.
How Mr. Simpson knew of the diplomat last August was unclear. He would have known of him in January when he wrote an op-ed in the New York Times in which he again told of an insider source.
As we told the Senate Judiciary Committee in August, our sources said the dossier was taken so seriously because it corroborated reports the bureau had received from other sources, including one inside the Trump camp, he wrote.
Moments after Sen. Dianne Feinstein, California Democrat, unilaterally released the transcript, the inside-source story spread, especially in London. The city is home base of Christopher Steele, the ex-British spy who wrote the dossier.
In his testimony, Mr. Simpson told of Mr. Steeles meeting with FBI agents in Rome in September 2016. Mr. Steele told Mother Jones magazine he was trying to jump-start an investigation into President Trump.
Mr. Simpson testified, Essentially what he told me was they had other intelligence about this matter from an internal Trump campaign source and that that they my understanding was that they believed Chris at this point that they believed Chriss information might be credible because they had other intelligence that indicated the same thing and one of those pieces of intelligence was a human source from inside the Trump organization.
Simpson did not "mischaracterize" anything in his testimony or his Times op-ed. He stated flatly that the FBI told him they thought the information in the dossier was credible because they had a source in the Trump campaign.
It's impossible to overstate the damage done by Simpson's lies. They can "retract" anything they want, but the fact that they didn't do it for two weeks after the Times op-ed appeared and several days after the actual testimony was leaked by Feinstein shows that their narrative about the dossier is unraveling. The media made a huge deal of the FBI source who, they say, validated what was in the dossier. Now we know there was no FBI source at all -- just an Australian diplomat who spoke to a drunk Trump operative.
Needless to say, Judiciary Chairman Charles Grassley was not pleased with the retraction:
The story corrections correction caught the eye of Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Charles Grassley, Iowa Republican, who on Thursday sent off a letter to Fusion attorney Joshua Levy. Mr. Grassley demanded to know why Mr. Levy did not correct the record after spending hours reviewing the transcript in October and November or contact the committee last Tuesday. If it is true that your clients statement to the Committee was a mischaracterization, why did you not attempt to correct your clients statement as soon as you and/or he realized it was not accurate? the senator wrote. Mr. Levy did not return a message seeking comment.
I don't think this was a question of mischaracterization. You were either told the FBI had a source in the Trump campaign or you weren't. Simpson said there was, but was obviously not told that, making his statement a lie under oath.
Grassley may be mad enough to look for a perjury vote. But the damage has been done. Those who wished to advance the collusion narrative got their ammunition while the truth was still putting on its boots.
"Ladies and Gentlemen, this is the last, and most important time I get to speak to you, the Jury.
First, again, thank you for your service. I've seen that you followed the evidence, and I glad we had you, each and every one of you, for a jury. This made-up case should never come to trial, but I glad we have you here to ensure justice is done.
It's all really very, very simple. We now know the entire "Russian Dossier", and everything about it, including the all the claims in it, the "sources," "confirmation", "verification," and everything else about it was and is total complete fiction!
In other words, totally made up lies!
This is the total complete fiction, the made-up lies that McCain accepted as fact, (because he wanted these lies to be true) made no attempt to verify, probably because anyone with 2 licks of common sense knew was complete... let me use the "B" word "Bunk," but all of you on the jury know what we all wish we could call it here in open court....
And then McCain gave to the FBI and in doing so swore it was bonafide, swore it was true, and the FBI used it to deceive a judge at the FISA Court into issuing a warrant to wiretap and break into the email of Donald Trump!
Is that your idea of fair?
Confusion GPS Founder Retracts the Inside Source as Claim of the Outside FBI Who Fumbled the Ball With a Minute to Go.
Obama’s FBI
I think he smells Arkancide.
Why would he have known about the Australian diplomat in January? That did not become public info until recently. Maybe the FBI was feeding him info? Maybe he was counting Papadopoulos as a source because the FBI fed him the info.
Why did he suddenly dis-remember what he recently remembered?
Because the FBI informant made him an offer he couldn’t refuse.

Ding, ding, ding! Winner winner chicken dinner! Fusion GPS is pure anti-American scum! I want to see those financial records!!!!
Fusion GPS is what Obama would refer to as a “shit show”.
I’m struck by the heavy involvement of foreign nationals in spreading these dossier lies and meddling in our election and politics. First, you have Christopher Steele, British intelligence and a member of the Socialist Club at Cambridge, cooking up the basest of lies that are the foundation for the FBI’s endless investigation. Steele traveled here, met with the FBI and media before and after the election; what right does this Brit have to determine who our leaders will be? Second, you have this pompous elitist jerk, the former British Ambassador to Russia Wood, who brings up the topic at international conferences and pushes the dossier to useful, angry idiots like McCain at higher levels. Third, you have this Australian ambassador to somethin’, having drinks with some low-level Trump campaign staffer, then betraying the poor fool by running his mouth about it and some alcohol-fueled mishmash about Russia to people in US positions of authority? Why the hell is the crumbling remains of the British Empire believing they have a right to select our leaders?? That ended with George III. Keep out of our politics, you have enough troubles in your own country
It seems that, when there is enough ‘under-oath testimony’ and ‘published reports’ to begin creating creditable time-lines, the stories fall apart.
Until then, it is difficult to separate rumor from fact, innuendo from truth. Of course, that is the intent — to obfuscate and misdirect.
Notice how the word ‘mischaracterize’ has suddenly shown up in two different narratives. These are word games intended to obfuscate and misdirect. The media and some politicians think they are being clever.
These lying bast**ds been doing a whole lot of ‘retracting’ lately....
The “Australian Diplomat” was found to have been long associated with & clearly coordinated with - ding - the Clinton Foundation ... the whole thing was concocted! Simpson’s wife Mary Jacoby had ties to old Clinton era Whitewater ties. Many dots to connect!
Glenn Simpson said that the FBI had a source inside the Trump campaign...
He lied to Congress. Why isn’t he in jail ?
The FBI can lie to you, but you can’t lie to them.
Catch 22
So, Mr. Simpson—Were you lying then or are you lying now?
Trump should fire the special prosecutor for failure to find any collusion. Then start cleaning out the FBI and the intelligence agencies of the plotters.
Time to be decisive!
