It must be that the guys in the FBI, and the news media for that matter, never heard of
Phil Zimmermann and the story of
Pretty Good Privacy encryption -- which is still the gold standard encryption for personal private use.
The difference, I suppose, is that the government persecuted Zimmerman for many years, threatening imprisonment, etc. Now all they can do is call Apple stupid names.
I suppose that's a considerable improvement.
