Walmart is abruptly closing several Sam's Club stores and laying off thousands [100+ stores?]

Walmart is suddenly closing several Sam's Club stores across the US.

Closures were reported by local media in Texas, New York, New Jersey, Indiana, Arizona, Alaska, and elsewhere.

In some cases, employees were not informed of the closures prior to showing up to work on Thursday.

Instead, they learned that their store would be closing when they found the store's doors locked and a notice announcing the closure, according to reports.

Walmart and Sam's Club did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Sam's Club offered an explanation on Twitter, however, saying, "After a thorough review of our existing portfolio, we’ve decided to close a series of clubs and better align our locations with our strategy. Closing clubs is never easy and we’re committed to working with impacted members and associates through this transition."

Since it appears that at least one of the stores was in California and there was no prior notice, odds are that all those employees just got a paid 60 day vacation on top of whatever scheduling they’re going to do for closing the store.

I’ve had to fire and lay off a few people.

We did not give them any notice.

And I’ve had it done to me as well.

That’s pretty standard.

Exactly.

It’s a harsh reality, but little good will come from giving them notice. Far too great a change that sabotage or theft will occur. That sort of thing is socially acceptable now days.

“Stick it to the man!”

That’s just the culture we live in today.

Let them go and give them a severance package in place of the notice.

I’ve heard it said that Walmart is barely hanging on in Calgary and in Alberta, as a whole. Of course, we are ‘blessed’ with a Prime Minister and a Premier who both believe that they can tax us into prosperity, so most businesses are hurting badly. I would not be surprised at all, if more than a few stores close in Alberta.

Working for ‘someone’, as in the topic, implies direct supervision. Shareholders are a disparate group. They are not “someone”. They may or may not agree of the performance. As long as the upper management does what is atleast equal to the possible alternatives, they are fine.

Abrupt termination of a business and/or projects is nothing new.
I worked construction most of my life. On more than one occasion, we showed up for work only to find the gate locked and a sign saying the job was shutdown indefinitely. Yeah, it probably isn’t the right way to do it and definitely creates a PIA. But we’d just go find another job if we could.

You don’t have to let them stay on the job though, they just had to give him salary and benefits for two weeks.

My husband works in power plants. Every time someone was fired – not laid off but fired – they were told at the gate. They were escorted in to get their belongings and then escorted out. And given two weeks pay and benefits. Sometimes more. But that’s because a disgruntled employee could do a lot of damage if they so desired.

I agree. I don’t think telling them in this way is any more traumatic than having them work for two weeks on a job they are losing. That might be more Traumatic in the long run.

Losing a job isn’t easy, no matter how you are told.

The only “in store” shopping left, not totally dominated by Amazon, is fruits and vegetables . Why do you screw with the rif raf when UPS brings it to your door? The people in these stores look like the walking dead. Total cultural shit hole. I reject it and avoid it.

30 days pay for employees who work ovr 20 hours per week is actually required by federal law. So, that’s a little better.

Reminds me of the night i was at the Ground Round restaurant in Norwood MA around 10 years ago.
My Bartender friend said “I’ll see you tomorrow”.
the next morning there was a closed for good sign on the door.

Nice they gave their employees notice and all...

Same thing happened with Logan’s restaurant here.

Employee’s showed up for work only to find the doors locked and a sign company truck taking down the signs from the building and from the roadside..................

Sam's closed most of their California stores a few years ago.
I don't see this as related to the Walmart pay/bonus issue.

Where I live in FL, the Costco and Sam's are right across the freeway from each other. In 2005 when I moved here, Costco was almost always nearly empty, while the Sam's was crowded. Now, it's the Costco that is always crowded and the Sam's less crowded than it used to be. Just my anecdotal evidence.

Last time I went to Sam’s, I was racially abused by two black employees. Never went back.

Ultimately this is about the fact that Walmart as big as it is, is no where near as efficient as Amazon who is eating their lunch.

Walmart has 2 option find a nitch where people are willing to pay more for the in-store experience(not likely to be big enough in a crowed retail field) or mechinize like Amazon which won’t be easy. Seeing as Amazon is a tech company with decades of lead way. And probably key patins on key robotics and web technology. Which Walmart has to reinvent as well as build.

Maybe Walmart should have kept the tax cut to rebuild their buiness instead of throwing more money after the employees they can’t afford.
