~The FReeper Canteen Presents~ Road Trip: Shaw Air Force Base, South Carolina Shaw Air Force Base (Shaw AFB) is a United States Air Force base located approximately 8.4 miles west-northwest of downtown Sumter, South Carolina. It is under the jurisdiction of the United States Air Force Air Combat Command (ACC). The United States Air Force 20th Fighter Wing (20th FW) is the host unit.
It is one of the largest military bases operated by the United States, and is one of only two air bases in CONUS with an active railroad line. (Beale AFB, CA, operates a lone GE 80-ton locomotive over the base railway. In Alaska, Eielson AFB and Clear Air Force Station have base railways with their own motive power.) The Shaw line was constructed in 1941 to bring in materials for base development, and has two GE 80-ton locomotives, 1644 and 1671. The 20th Fighter Wing, Shaw Air Force Base, S.C., provide combat ready airpower and Airmen, to meet any challenge, anytime, anywhere. The wing is capable of meeting all operational requirements worldwide, maintains a state of combat readiness and operates as the host unit at Shaw by providing facilities, personnel and material. The wing has flown the following aircraft: North American P 51 Mustang (1947-48), Republic F 84D/F/G Thunderjet (1948-57), North American F 100 Super Sabre (1957-71), General Dynamics F 111E Aardvark (1970-93), General Dynamics EF-111A Raven (1984-1992), Fairchild Republic A/OA 10A Thunderbolt II (1994-1996), and General Dynamics/Lockheed F-16C/DM Fighting Falcon (1994-present). Shaw units and personnel have played significant roles in world history by training pilots for World War II, and deploying forces to participate in the Cuban Missile Crisis, Operation URGENT FURY, Operation JUST CAUSE, Operation DESERT SHIELD and DESERT STORM; Joint Task Force Proven Force; Operation PROVIDE COMFORT; Operations SOUTHERN WATCH and NORTHERN WATCH; Operation ALLIED FORCE; Operation ENDURING FREEDOM, Operation IRAQI FREEDOM and most recently, Operation Unified Protector.
