Back in September, Texas residents Vicki Bergquist and wife Jeanette LeBlanc were visiting family in Louisiana. They went crabbing with friends and family on the coast, picking up a sack of raw oysters in a market in Westwego. It wasn't long after when LeBlanc's health rapidly declined, CBS affiliate KLFY reports.
The couple's friend Karen Bowers says she and LeBlanc shucked and ate about two dozen raw oysters.
"About 36 hours later she started having extreme respiratory distress, had a rash on her legs and everything," Bergquist said.
"An allergic reaction of sorts, that's what I would call it. That's what we thought," Bowers added.
LeBlanc's condition went from bad to worse in the first 48 hours.
Doctors told Jeanette she had vibrio a potentially deadly bacterial infection.
"It's a flesh-eating bacteria. She had severe wounds on her legs from that bacteria," Bergquist said.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, people can become infected with vibrio after eating raw or under-cooked shellfish or by exposing open wounds to brackish water.
LeBlanc had been in contact with both. For the next 21 days, she fought for her life.
"I can't even imagine going through that for 21 days, much less a day. Most people don't last," Bowers said.
LeBlanc was not able to recover. She died on October 15th, 2017.

She may well have done some shucking without gloves, which would have created a cut that the bacteria could have used for entry. (I must say that my mind is starting to wander with all this talk of lesbians, shucking, gloves and clams.)
You would think they would use a different term. Spouse would be a more acceptable term. Truth is, I stopped reading there, too.
Dont understand the real point of printing this.
My guess is just to refer to a homosexual married couple. Dont want them to feel left out of the news.

The article does not mention if her immune system was compromised by illness or chemotherapy. Healthy people are constantly exposed to vibro and other fatal pathogens and do not succumb.
How about “If you’ll be Frank with me I’ll be Ernest with you” !!!

Raw oysters? Hate them. It’s like eating wads of phlegm.
“clams of bearded variety...”
And their mortal enemy the love python.
“LeBlanc’s condition went from bad to worse in the first 48 hours.”
How long did we wait before going to a doctor? Probably blew it off as just another “rash”.
