Back in September, Texas residents Vicki Bergquist and wife Jeanette LeBlanc were visiting family in Louisiana. They went crabbing with friends and family on the coast, picking up a sack of raw oysters in a market in Westwego. It wasn't long after when LeBlanc's health rapidly declined, CBS affiliate KLFY reports.
The couple's friend Karen Bowers says she and LeBlanc shucked and ate about two dozen raw oysters.
"About 36 hours later she started having extreme respiratory distress, had a rash on her legs and everything," Bergquist said.
"An allergic reaction of sorts, that's what I would call it. That's what we thought," Bowers added.
LeBlanc's condition went from bad to worse in the first 48 hours.
Doctors told Jeanette she had vibrio a potentially deadly bacterial infection.
"It's a flesh-eating bacteria. She had severe wounds on her legs from that bacteria," Bergquist said.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, people can become infected with vibrio after eating raw or under-cooked shellfish or by exposing open wounds to brackish water.
LeBlanc had been in contact with both. For the next 21 days, she fought for her life.
"I can't even imagine going through that for 21 days, much less a day. Most people don't last," Bowers said.
LeBlanc was not able to recover. She died on October 15th, 2017.

Don’t stop, don’t look, and whatever you do, never get food is Westwego.

This is one of those enemedia stories where the actual story should be, and is, the agenda prompting its broadcast/publication.

I was introduced to oysters--in New Orleans, ironically--many years ago. My impression was that they were largely over-rated, at least when eaten raw. I mostly remember the inevitable few grains of sand that seem to accompany every oyster.
Still, what a way to die. I wouldn't wish it upon anyone.

How does eating oysters give you flesh eating bacteria? I understand getting it in cuts through the skin or from surgery - but Not consumption?

The headline blames the oysters, but the article suggests that she may have also exposed open wounds to brackish water. Maybe it wasn’t the oysters?

Am I so cynical to think that this story would have never made the news had this been a traditional married couple?

I’m from New Orleans where raw oysters are a delicacy. But I would never eat any seafood raw. I love fried oysters and charbroiled oysters.

Staving off starvation is the only thing that would convince me to ever eat muscles, let alone raw ones. I eat 'em all the time. Usually not raw, but sometimes medium-rare.

Since we are throwing away all common sense, why is Jeanette not her husband? First Lesbian: Let me be frank.

One of the reasons God said don’t eat them...they’re not fit for human consumption.
