Nearly 200,000 people from El Salvador who have been allowed to live in the United States for more than a decade must leave the country, two government officials familiar with the decision said on Monday. It is the Trump administrations latest reversal of years of immigration policies and one of the most consequential to date.
The officials, who declined to be identified because they were speaking before an official announcement on the decision later Monday morning, said that the administration was ending a humanitarian program, known as Temporary Protected Status, for Salvadorans who have been allowed to live and work legally in the United States since a pair of devastating earthquakes struck their country in 2001.
Salvadorans were by far the largest group of foreigners benefiting from temporary protected status, which shielded them from deportation if they had arrived in the United States illegally. The decision came just weeks after more than 45,000 Haitians, the second largest group, lost protections granted after Haitis 2010 earthquake, and it suggested that others in the program, namely Hondurans, may soon lose them as well. Nicaraguans lost their protections last year.
In the days leading up to the decision, immigrant advocates and the El Salvadoran government pleaded for the United States to extend the program, as it has several times since 2001, saying that conditions in El Salvador were still dire. A sense of dread gripped Salvadorans and their employers in California, Texas, Virginia and elsewhere.

Cant wait to be able to drive without congestion, see housing rates drop, be able to eat out at fast food restaurants, etc.
And they just dont do well at plowing snow.
Maybe because ms 13 loves to kill people in the most savage and cruel way possible, and they all come from El Salvador.
Good move. Ends years of law breaking by open-border dirtbags like Bill Clinton, Stuttering-Drunk George Bush Junior, and Hussein Obama.
Buh-bye.
Wonderful!
Good start. But Trump needs to also help to Make Mexico Great Again. Deport the illegals and fix what is broken here. MEGA $$$$ BILLIONS are spent on these uneducated third world peeps (many on welfare) who should have never been allowed to be here in the first place.
Its good we are stopping these types of programs but I doubt most of them will leave without being deported. From what I understand El Salvador sucks (I know not our problem theoretically) - I'd imagine most would rather live illegally here than return voluntarily. If it were me I'd take my chances living in the shadows.
Most are going use the time window to melt away from their current identities.
I do believe this is a bit different than DACA and allowing them to stay for so long was a big mistake but is it the individual El Salvadorians fault or the fault of the US government?
We got to start somewhere and this appears to be one of the starting points but this is going to get a bit ugly.
Exporting Capitalism!
Does the Marxist FLMN faction still run El Salvador or did a non-Marxist government take over?
A real smashing of MS-13 in El Salvador would be a great reason for earthquake refugees to go back home (and with the money they have saved, they can open businesses and get their country going again).
Yep. I live on Long Island NY right near Brentwood where MS-13 has been having a field day with mass murder. ALL of them are from El Salvador and almost all of the ones who are arrested entered the USA with the assistance of the traitor to the United states B. Hussein Obama in his “unaccompanied minors” scam. It’s so bad here, just about every month they bust new ones. Last December they rounded up a bunch AND they were enrolled in High school!
One thing I do, just in case, is to cut out the espanyol portion of all saved instruction manuals.
