Battered by the backlash from Michael Wolff's book, Steve Bannon is trying to make amends with the Trump family, providing a statement to Axios that expresses "regret" to President Trump and praises his son, Donald Trump Jr.
"Donald Trump, Jr. is both a patriot and a good man. He has been relentless in his advocacy for his father and the agenda that has helped turn our country around."
"My support is also unwavering for the president and his agenda as I have shown daily in my national radio broadcasts, on the pages of Breitbart News and in speeches and appearances from Tokyo and Hong Kong to Arizona and Alabama."
"President Trump was the only candidate that could have taken on and defeated the Clinton apparatus. I am the only person to date to conduct a global effort to preach the message of Trump and Trumpism; and remain ready to stand in the breech for this president's efforts to make America great again."
"My comments about the meeting with Russian nationals came from my life experiences as a Naval officer stationed aboard a destroyer whose main mission was to hunt Soviet submarines to my time at the Pentagon during the Reagan years when our focus was the defeat of 'the evil empire' and to making films about Reagan's war against the Soviets and Hillary Clinton's involvement in selling uranium to them."
"My comments were aimed at Paul Manafort, a seasoned campaign professional with experience and knowledge of how the Russians operate. He should have known they are duplicitous, cunning and not our friends. To reiterate, those comments were not aimed at Don Jr."
"Everything I have to say about the ridiculous nature of the Russian 'collusion' investigation I said on my 60 Minutes interview. There was no collusion and the investigation is a witch hunt."
"I regret that my delay in responding to the inaccurate reporting regarding Don Jr has diverted attention from the president's historical accomplishments in the first year of his presidency." The backstory ... In Wolff's book, Bannon is quoted as saying of Mueller's prosecutors: "Theyre going to crack Don Junior like an egg on national TV.'"
Be smart: While Bannon's statement may seem like a baby step, he's as stubborn as Trump when it comes to apologizing and admitting he has made a mistake. He views any concession as a sign of humiliating weakness.
What's next: Look for Don Jr. to accept the statement graciously. But Bannon has further to go with President Trump: Axios has learned that POTUS has said that he wants surrogates who appear for him on TV to "bury Steve."
Axios' Jonathan Swan reported last night: Trump has been working the phones over the past several days, telling allies they need to choose between him and Bannon. P.S. "Fake book" ... Trump tweets as he leaves Camp David: "Ive had to put up with the Fake News from the first day I announced that I would be running for President. Now I have to put up with a Fake Book, written by a totally discredited author."
"Ronald Reagan had the same problem and handled it well. So will I!"
Did the Camp David meeting get even a mention on the MSM? Maybe once at 2a.m, so they can say that they covered it?
Hes only sober on Sunday, maybe.
It was the ambition that did him in.
He was put on a special project where he got to work closely with the CEO. Unfortunately, he used that opportunity to obtain dirt on other executives that might stand in his way later on. Once he went back to his regular role, he began using that information improperly and began building his own little empire with a circle of cronies he thought he could trust. Eventually one or more of those he trusted became whistleblowers and his scheming was exposed. Thus, a promising career was destroyed virtually overnight. The CEO brought him into his office and told him he had to go as he could no longer be trusted.
I happened to be in the building when he got escorted out and he was blubbering like a baby.
All this because his head got too big and he overvalued his importance in the operation. He also thought he was smarter than everybody else. He felt he was able to outmaneuver people that had been around the block and saw that movie play out before.
Maybe that's what happened with Bannon here. Did he actually think he was a plausible candidate for president in 2020? Was he trying to undermine Trump so that he could take control of the movement for himself? If he truly said those things to a left-wing hack like Wolff, thinking that would help his prospects long term, then he's not as smart as he thought he was. The blowback was massive on this one.
Don't see how Bannon recovers. Unless, as others speculate, this is some kind of elaborate "Trump-Bannon" sting that has not fully played out yet. I'm not in that camp. I think Bannon just tried to take out the king. You never go after the king unless you are certain you will kill him.
The soap opera continues.
Politics is a scam and were suckers for playing.
As a screw up artist myself, I have to admit I have some empathy for the man. I hope this is a Romans 8:28 for all concerned.
...
Eli, astutely found...good point...some Luke 6:37 ish, too...
I think he veered into "acted stupidly" territory more than anything else ....
George H W Bush was the one who coined the phrase “voodoo economics” in the primary.
What did Miller say about Bannon?
You can NEVER talk your way out of what you behaved your way into.
True, but I doubt making phone calls to his allies about Bannon, while hosting Admin officials, and Congressional Republicans, was high on his agenda this weekend. Besides, all he'd have to do is Tweet what he wanted to say.
Getting close to the seat of power can drive a man crazy.
Just like possessing a magic gold ring that makes you invisible.
Whether it was Bannon’s ego, or Wolff’s artistic license the whole episode is a Charlie Foxtrot.

You can bet the farm that responding to the media maelstrom Bannon created was very high on Trump’s list. That’s one reason he’s so furious with Bannon. Trump has his hands full already, and here Bannon goes, lighting a bonfire and throwing gasoline on it.
No way Trump didn’t make those calls. He had a head of steam, not to mention a fire to put out. As I said before, he can walk and chew gum.
“What did Miller say about Bannon?”
It’s more what he didn’t say. Tapper was trying to lure Miller in by making it seem like Bannon brought in Trump people. Miller wasn’t taking the bait.
That doesn’t begin to convince me Trump is over it. Bannon accused Trump’s son of committing treason and said Trump had foreknowledge that it was going to happen. If you know anything about Trump, you know he’s not going to pretend such a gross betrayal never happened any time soon.
I guess you picked the right screen name.
I truly was a follower of Newts until I watched as he sold out many he had mentored and encouraged to run for office, then completely backed away from impeaching Clintons impeachment, as he was screwing the wonderful Calista, his aide, while married to Maryann (whom he was also dating while married to his first wife!)
Which, now that I think of it, is a lot like McCain, whom I never liked.
You are right, Stockman was the “trickle down” guy...
From Wikipedia...
*Stockman was quoted as referring to Reagan’s tax act in these terms: “I mean, Kemp-Roth [Reagan’s 1981 tax cut] was always a Trojan horse to bring down the top rate.... It’s kind of hard to sell ‘trickle down.’ So the supply-side formula was the only way to get a tax policy that was really ‘trickle down.’ Supply-side is ‘trickle-down’ theory.”[7] Of the budget process during his first year on the job, Stockman was quoted as saying, “None of us really understands what’s going on with all these numbers,” which was used as the subtitle of the article.[7]”
Where’s the link?
I spelled out actual reasons. You have no reasons bc you don’t know the Camp David schedule. You are assuming it was wall to wall meetings with only meals in between. More likely there were times when they met and breaks in between. That would be a more typical schedule.
Btw, I was close to an executive for decades. In these types of situations, not only were there breaks but people could use mealtimes for phone calls if needed. It doesn’t take long to eat if phone calls are more important.
