Battered by the backlash from Michael Wolff's book, Steve Bannon is trying to make amends with the Trump family, providing a statement to Axios that expresses "regret" to President Trump and praises his son, Donald Trump Jr.
"Donald Trump, Jr. is both a patriot and a good man. He has been relentless in his advocacy for his father and the agenda that has helped turn our country around."
"My support is also unwavering for the president and his agenda as I have shown daily in my national radio broadcasts, on the pages of Breitbart News and in speeches and appearances from Tokyo and Hong Kong to Arizona and Alabama."
"President Trump was the only candidate that could have taken on and defeated the Clinton apparatus. I am the only person to date to conduct a global effort to preach the message of Trump and Trumpism; and remain ready to stand in the breech for this president's efforts to make America great again."
"My comments about the meeting with Russian nationals came from my life experiences as a Naval officer stationed aboard a destroyer whose main mission was to hunt Soviet submarines to my time at the Pentagon during the Reagan years when our focus was the defeat of 'the evil empire' and to making films about Reagan's war against the Soviets and Hillary Clinton's involvement in selling uranium to them."
"My comments were aimed at Paul Manafort, a seasoned campaign professional with experience and knowledge of how the Russians operate. He should have known they are duplicitous, cunning and not our friends. To reiterate, those comments were not aimed at Don Jr."
"Everything I have to say about the ridiculous nature of the Russian 'collusion' investigation I said on my 60 Minutes interview. There was no collusion and the investigation is a witch hunt."
"I regret that my delay in responding to the inaccurate reporting regarding Don Jr has diverted attention from the president's historical accomplishments in the first year of his presidency." The backstory ... In Wolff's book, Bannon is quoted as saying of Mueller's prosecutors: "Theyre going to crack Don Junior like an egg on national TV.'"
Be smart: While Bannon's statement may seem like a baby step, he's as stubborn as Trump when it comes to apologizing and admitting he has made a mistake. He views any concession as a sign of humiliating weakness.
What's next: Look for Don Jr. to accept the statement graciously. But Bannon has further to go with President Trump: Axios has learned that POTUS has said that he wants surrogates who appear for him on TV to "bury Steve."
Axios' Jonathan Swan reported last night: Trump has been working the phones over the past several days, telling allies they need to choose between him and Bannon. P.S. "Fake book" ... Trump tweets as he leaves Camp David: "Ive had to put up with the Fake News from the first day I announced that I would be running for President. Now I have to put up with a Fake Book, written by a totally discredited author."
"Ronald Reagan had the same problem and handled it well. So will I!"
You suck Rich...
Best laugh of the day!! “Sloppy Joe Steve Bannon”. Good one!
Cannon is either delusional, or intent on us losing the Senate, along with the House.
Guess Mike's not used to seeing a Republican/conservative refusing to join the customary loservative circular firing squad...
That said, good post. It may or may not be accurate.
Stockman was the Genius at least partially responsible for Reagan’s economic policies.
I still follow Stockman some and view him as a good guy. I should follow him more.
Stockman didn’t betray Reagan that I know of.
Supposedly Stockman got on the wrong side of Nancy Reagan somehow who demanded that her husband sever ties with him.
Viewed that whole thing as a betrayal of Stockman, not a betrayal by Stockman.
Seemed like a bad episode of Cronyism.
I view Reagan as a greater than life persin, however I view the treatment of Stockman as a mistake he made.
With Bannon however there now appears to be disloyalty and back stabbing.
Bush Sr. is the guy who came up with the voodoo economics quote and said it, though he later lied and denied having said it. There was film of him saying it. The tv news then did a good job showing Bush Sr. Saying it and then denying that he had ever said it. Was an outright lie he was caught in prior to his no new taxes lie.

Two things Steve Bannon needs to do to survive politically. One, get down on his hands & knees and publicly, verbally apologize and beg forgiveness to & for, POTUS, Donald J. Trump, Don, Jr, Ivanka, Jarad, and, then he must openly in broad media coverage, TV, Internet, etc. destroy both Author MIchael Wolff and his fake news book. Anything less then this and, Breitbart should fire this low life Traitor, Turncoat...today!!! Case closed!!!
I like your thought that Trump has been busy at Camp David. And even more - I doubt that there is much of a “choice”. Side with the most conservative President in a LONG time, or side with a conservative blogger and political dog.
And I'm not so sure why we think we even need to take sides over what some liberal hack writer is lying about. And especially attacking one another in pubic.
His plans to be the champion of Non=Incumbent Republican Primary candidates is Dead. He will no longer be a player.
Be sensible will not win you any friends in this discussion. But I for one appreciate it anyway.
He should have omitted the following sentence as regardless of what anyone thinks of Trump/Bannon/anyone the truth on this will show in Steve Bannon’s lifelong track record - particularly during the 2015-present era of Trump running for president as a Republican & being President. “I am the only person to date to conduct a global effort to preach the message of Trump and Trumpism”
Good analysis lonevoice and I totally agree with your conclusions.
That's no excuse. In fact it's worse. Bannon has now had days to find his tongue to truly apologize or at least deny what Wolff claims he said and he HASN'T!!!
The guy’s name was Wolff and they let him in!
I believe Bannon. I do not believe Wolfe. His “treason” comment was not against Don Junior. That was a lie. Bannon is history unless Trump has compassion here. Im afraid it is too late but I assure you that Trump would not be president without Bannon’s nationalism which has swelled the US with pride again. Thanks Steve.
If he is to return to duty it should be conditional on anger counseling and or alcohol counseling. President Trump can only tolerate very few days like yesterday's firestorm over the disloyalty reflected in the new book.
If he didn’t say what the liar wolff said he said and he didnt say what wolff said he said , why would you take that position?
‘but I assure you that Trump would not be president without Bannons nationalism’
Trump was championing nationalism while Bannon was still hyping Cruz. Both Bannon and his cheerleaders have a wildly exaggerated view of his influence. If he had the ability to help Trump nationally, then winning with Moore in a ruby red state should have been child’s play.
Bannon is ineffective at best. Trump, with God’s help, is responsible for Trump’s win.
