People are feeling sticker shock over Seattles sugary drink tax.
You mightve seen a picture circulating on social media that shows a more than $10 tax on a $15.99 case of Gatorade at Costco. On Friday, shoppers were taking their own pictures, stunned by the new prices.
Advocates of the tax held a press conference on Friday, to explain how the city plans to use the $15 million expected to be raised from the tax in 2018.
One Costco shopper loaded a case of Coca-Cola into her cart, not noticing the new price until KIRO7 pointed it out.
That much! said Vilma Villagran, who was buying the case for her family.
The regular case of Coke is now $7.35 more expensive than the Diet Coke or Coke Zero.
I knew it was going to be high, but not that crazy high, Villagran said.
Other shoppers closely read the sign, which explains that as of Jan. 1, Seattle shoppers are paying 1.75 cents per ounce on sugar-sweetened beverages something shoppers are really noticing when buying in bulk.
The tax has many people opting for the diet soda.

"Of all tyrannies, a tyranny sincerely exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive. It would be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber barons cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated; but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end for they do so with the approval of their own conscience."
CS Lewis
Legalize sugar and tax the hell out of it.
Corn lobby isn’t gonna be happy. Lobbyists are going to have to demand another kickback from Uncle Sugar (U.S.).
And those diet sludge drinks aren’t healthy either.
Neither is random bath house sex in the homosexual community.
But hey, liberalism is a mental disorder.
This is a small price to pay for living in a progressive Utopia! :-(
So today, “The Bandit” would be running Stewart’s Root Beer into Seattle instead of Coors into Atlanta.
And what, exactly, gives our worthless government the right to demand money from us because we choose to drink product X instead of product Y?
What’s next? A tax because I choose extra soft toilet paper?
And people cannot even run to Oregon to avoid the tax, with so many cars exploding at gas stations every day, now that they’ve been forced to pump their own gas.
“sugary drink”, really? It’s pop. Or soda. We are not in London.
I would just ban it and throw the makers, dealers and distributors in jail since it is a cause of the leading health disaster in America.
People will be buying their Coke in markets out of Seattle’s city limits. The state legislature may impose a statewide tax that would be allocated back to the cities. Then, you will have people loading up cases of Coke from the Indian reservations. The Indians will love it.
You are so right! In order, the worst is diet, next corn syrup, finally sugar; and that isn't bad, it's that some drink too much of it and it makes them fat!
Die, fatties, die!
You picks your poison when it comes to the soft drinks. The socialist Big Brothers will eventually do the same thing with the artificially sweetened stuff too.
New Democrat mantra. Make America pay again.
We disagree, to put it mildly. The government has a legitimate role in informing the public. Once we are informed, freedom means we get to choose, even if a petty dictator doesn’t like out choices.
Note: We agree that sugary soft drinks are harmful. Where we disagree is that I consider Nanny Government a far greater threat - pure evil regardless of the claimed benign intent.
It is strange that my 91 year-old mother drank lots of Coke, ate lots of cookies and pies, and had her bowl of cereal sweetened with sugar every morning. My question is why has that “poison” sugar had no affect where others are having health problems? Maybe some research may come up with some answers as well as some cures.
TRANSLATION: "I see you have some money there. Give it to me."
Diet coke is a lot healthier than pure corn syrup sugar. It’s amazing how many people drink 600-1000+ calories a day between sodas and coffee with stuff in it. There is a reason something like 70% of adults are overweight.
In Philly, they tax the diet sodas too.
The road to Hell is paved with good intentions.
Buahahahahaha!
Feel that liberal fascism that’s been sneaking up on America since 2008?
Whatchagonnado when they come for you?
Black Market sweet drinks, here we come.
Next it will be potato chips and pork rinds, ye fat f*cks!
