A contest for the seat held by the Bullitt County Republican would have to be filled by special election.
The preacher turned politician died Wednesday night, the Bullitt County Coroner ruled the death a suicide.
There has been no call for a special election as of yet, but when it happens, Rebecca Johnsons statement makes it clear that she wants to be the Republican nominee. State law requires the county political parties to nominate a candidate for a special election.

Hey lady, we don’t have “peerage” in America !
rdl6989’s article sums things up well. Local folks tell me that his social media was inundated with some vicious stuff from all over the country. Even members of his congregation were being attacked. Apparently he couldn’t take the pressure and killed himself even after the local police refused to prosecute after an investigation. His widow has taken some flak for not “observing a mourning period” before announcing her candidacy. I think she is doing the right thing. Rep. Johnson was the victim of a high tech lynching. Mrs. Johnson is refusing to give in to the hate.
Peerage? She filed with the Sec of State and is running like any other candidate. Is there a law that forbids wives of politicians from running for public office. She will face the voters like any other candidate.
Yes, peerage, not in law, but in spirit.
Running for your spouse's old seat before his funeral smacks of elitism, America isn't supposed to have a political ruling class ...
It’s all bots and fake accounts. People need to learn this. The majority of internet attacks are carried out by paid professional.
“peerage”
Exactly. I don’t know when we started thinking that just because a woman is married to a man elected to a political job, she can step right into it.
I blame feminism. That’s how we got Her Heinous, Hitlery Rotten Clinton and Moochelle “Mike” Obama thinking she’s all that.
I'll stand by that....

Recently....
Sonny Bono wife Mary ‘assumed the position’
Then MacCaskill(sp) took over AFTER husband died
Even in small companies, Unless the surviving spouse works in Upper Management he/she won’t take over the company upon death of the other
Can’t really see an Asphalt or Concrete foremans wife taking over his crew just because he dies ....
You are thinking of Jean Carnahan, not Claire MacCrapskul.
Widows have been running forever, most of the first women elected were widows or wives of living husbands looking to skirt gubernatorial term limits.
People freaking out about this as “peerage” or other silliness should understand her husband only won the seat in Nov 2016 and took office last January. This isn’t like some solid GOP seat where the husband held it for decades and she’s muscling out countless other worthy lesser officeholders and aspirants to get the nomination. It was formerly a Dem district. Keeping the seat is important.
U r exempt from any obligation to do door to door in this iced month.
