Study Shows High Use Of Marijuana Among Pregnant Women

California - A new study has found that smoking marijuana is increasing among pregnant women in California, which leads to health concerns about the unborn child.

The study was published on Dec. 26 in the Journal of the American Medical Association, according to Fox News, and used the medical records of 279,000 women residing in California who were on Kaiser Permanente, a health care service.

Women who agreed to participate were asked to answer a questionnaire when they were about eight weeks pregnant, and take a drug test to see if they tested positive for marijuana use. In the study, researchers found that marijuana consumption among pregnant women in the state has risen from 2009 to 2016 from 4.2 percent to 7.1 percent.

Kelly Young-Wolff, the study’s lead researcher, and Dr. Nancy Goler, a researcher, said their study shows how marijuana might potentially harm an unborn child.

"Our study is important because it addressed key limitations of prior studies by investigating trends in prenatal marijuana use using data from a large California health care system with gold standard universal screening for prenatal marijuana use," Goler and Young-Wolff told Reuters.

"We were concerned to find that the prevalence of marijuana use in pregnancy is increasing more quickly among younger females, aged 24 and younger, and to see the high prevalence of use in this age group," Young-Wolff said.

Both Young-Wolff and Goler noted marijuana was the “most commonly used illegal drug during pregnancy,” and could “impair fetal growth and neuro-development,” Reuters reported.

Marijuana use may be on the rise because recent legalization of its recreational use in some states "has made people think of the drug as less dangerous, even during pregnancy," according to Barbara Yankey, a researcher at Georgia State University.

"Because of the possibility of concurrent use of marijuana and other substances of abuse, the evidence of its direct association with preterm labor, fetal growth restriction, preterm birth, low birthweight and stillbirth is still debatable, though these adverse effects lean more towards an increased likelihood of occurrence," Yankey said.

“The more we study cannabis use during pregnancy, the more we are realizing how harmful it can be,” Dr. Marcel Bonn-Miller, a researcher at the University of Pennsylvania Perelman School of Medicine in Philadelphia said. She was not involved in the study.

California will make recreational marijuana possession legal in 2018.

So weird. It’s like if you legalize something, people do it a lot more.

Add that to the insane health claims like it does you more good than any substance ever discovered and there you go.

Some of these nitwits probably think they are doing their baby good.

Reap what you sow.

....”It’s inherently dangerous. It should NEVER be legalized....What a freakin mistake.”....

Yep....

I get tired of the comparisons to alcohol when in fact marijuana shares more in common with the hard drugs than it does with alcohol. ....marijuana has been shown to have a residual effect on cognitive ability that persists beyond the period of intoxication. ... whereas alcohol is broken down relatively quickly in the human body, THC the main active chemical in marijuana 'is stored' in organs and fatty tissues, allowing it to remain in a user’s body for days or even weeks after consumption.

To equate marijuana use with alcohol consumption is, at best, uninformed and, at worst, actively misleading. Only in the most superficial ways are the two substances alike, and they differ in every way that counts: addictiveness, toxicity, health effects, and risk of intoxication.

“And today the CDC is trying to push the BAC standard down to 0.05 and then 0.03. In Sweden it is 0.01.”

I participated in a study back in the 70s. The dirty little secret is that healthy young men drive better at 0.10 than they do at 0.00.

“MJ was illegal for a looooong time. Had it been legal over the past 100 years, I’m pretty sure the death rate would be right up their with tobacco and alcohol.”

You don’t have to speculate. From 1921 through 1933, MJ was legal and alcohol was illegal. There should be all kinds of death reports, especially since Progressives who ran the government were hot to prohibit all manner of things.

I know someone who wants to have children.

She smokes marijuana and will continue through her pregnancy.

Some weird disease she has and the MJ helps.

I’d never let her have my child.

Time will tell.

Alcohol was always considered the more “social” of the two vices when compared to MJ. Pardon my speculation.

It wasn’t that “ladylike” to take a drag on a hand rolled MJ as opposed to a mixed drink or a very very long filter ciggie.

p.s. back from 1921-1933 there were few women drivers.

we are talking about women who jump behind the wheel, toke, text, you name it whilst driving.

Gee. Now why in the world would the incidence of autism and learning disabilities be increasing. Must be the vaccines and global warming.

THC slows down sperm cells...makes them not swim so well. So one good thing I suppose will be a decreasing pregnancy rate in the uber liberal high use areas.

Just reading an article from the bay area in California...saying how happy people are in Oakland. One dude was SO happy...he showed off his 3 (count ‘em) 3 joints for $45.

If the consumption of alcohol and smoking tobacco are both harmful to babies in the mother’s womb, why should folks deny that marijuana is also harmful? In my view is that they deny it because it is their favor drug. Regarding tobacco, I remember my cousin, when she was pregnant gave up smoking from the moment she found out she was carrying and then for sometime after each of her children were born.

weed will become the standard for our youth and not so young as well...

it will profoundly change our society...

our work ethic..

our drive to excel

not me, nor mine.

..but a lot of people.

many who are shallow, simpletons without any critical thinking capabilities...

sorry to say, I see the vast majority of Americans in that category....

...You didn’t hear about it because you didn’t want to know...

I have been sober for 29 years. I don't use any drugs. I have not smoked tobacco for 50 years.

I know what I am talking about.

...Marijuana is already a known leading factor in thousands of accidental deaths and injuries...

MJ has been with us for thousands of years. It did not suddenly spring on the scene.

Most people who use MJ also drink alcohol -- usually at the same time. But if you are so convinced that MJ leads to so many accidental deaths, why don't you give us a link to a few references on that?

they differ in every way that counts: addictiveness,

Yes, of those who have used alcohol 15% have at some time had a dependency on it, while the corresponding figure for marijuana is 9%.

toxicity,

Yes, while alcohol is known to be toxic, no fatal human dose of THC has been established - in fact, researchers have been unable to kill any lab animal larger than a rat with THC.

health effects,

Yes, no cirrhosis from marijuana. (Nor lung disease from alcohol.)

and risk of intoxication.

For each drug, degree of intoxication increases with amount used; one can get completely obliterated, or only mildly buzzed, with either drug.
