Six years after the Sandusky scandal rocked Penn State, university leadership is still fighting a civil war over the case, a conflict fueled, in part, by weaknesses that have developed in investigations that concluded top Penn State officials covered up for the convicted child molester.

Not Penn State, it was all Graham Spanier. HIS stated goal, he was was very proud of the progress he made.
And they still follow it, happily.
Actually Cardinal Law wasn’t jailed because at the time it was not a crime to not report child abuse. Now with mandatory reporting of child abuse he would be in jail for multiple offenses.
That may well be the case, but I assume there are responsibilities on the doctors’ parts as well. In reading the deposition, Law hadn’t returned priests to ministry who weren’t cleared by them; now they may be required to report it as well (if they aren’t, they should be).
Law definitely liked to give pedophile priests 2nd, 3rd, 4th chances. Geoghan alone was given at least a dozen. The doctors deserve some blame but how many of them knew all the history. The doctors also weren’t the ones placing Geoghan in positions of authority with children. The doctors weren’t handing out payoffs to victims. The doctors didn’t know the victims. Law knew who the victims were and never visited a single one. Law kept placing the same problems into different parishes. In the end Law just didn’t care. Which is now against the law.
After Paterno and company were informed that Sandusky was showering with a child did any of them ever investigate into the well being of the child? I’m not talking about making a report or contacting authorities. Did any of that gang ever seek out the child personally contact his parents, ensure that that child was ok?
That was the one thing that has always stuck in my mind. I just can’t fathom the callousness.
I'll admit that I don't recall doing the things Sandusky would call playful with anyone across generations but I certainly horsed around in showers with other kids as a child.
I got the impression from Pendergrat's book that Sandusky and Paterno didn't really get along. It would seem strange to me, especially after Sandusky retired from coaching in 1999, that Paterno would have done anything to protect Sandusky including looking the other way if he thought Sandusky was molesting children anywhere, but particularly at his Penn State facilities.
The callousness you cannot fathom only makes sense if you buy the media narrative. If Penn State people thought little or nothing about Sandusky horsing around with kids, then there was no callousness.

I played sports and belonged to the YMCA. I never witnessed an adult male horsing around naked with a child in the showers. The only witness to this crime states Sandusky was raping the child. That witness should have done more but instead informed Paterno. The three leaders of the institution when informed of the crime never looked into the welfare of the child. This isn’t the only crime Sandusky was accused. He had his trial and was convicted.

Of course, there was a lot discussed that I knew but John made two points that I hadn't considered before. The first was that none of the supposed victims testified to having been abused when in a shower in the Sandusky home, which would have been a much safer place for such activity than the Penn State showers. (Some did claim to have been abused in Sandusky's basement playroom.) And the other point is that none of the testifying supposed victims turned out to be a homosexual. (Sandusky supposedly broke up a teenage affair that his adopted son, who later turned again him, was having.)
It's worth listening to, if you want a good overview about the case.

Case, in point!
See, you think this but, in fact, that's not what happened. McQueary didn't see any rape. What he did was hear slapping sounds coming from the shower area that he interpreted as sexual. He briefly saw a boy in a mirror image of that shower area. He later saw Jerry Sandusky walk out of the shower area. He discussed this incident with his father and doctor friend of his father's that same night. This is their recollection. They advised him to discuss the incident with Joe Paterno (NOT the police!) which he did the following day. McQueary's memory morphed over time to just short of sodomy, but the father's and the doctor's memory did not.
The boy in the shower, Allan Myers, "wrote a letter to a newspaper, and submitted a sworn statement to the Pennsylvania State Police and a private investigator to the effect that he was not abused that night or any other time by Jerry Sandusky." (Quoting from Pendergrast's book - This occurred about ten years after the shower when Myers was about 24 years old.) One of the gold-digging lawyers got to him soon afterwards and he became "Victim #2," thin gruel indeed upon which to send a man to prison.

But it's a nice propaganda photo. Goebbels would have approved. I'm sure Hillary did as well.

Joe was not an investigator. He could easily ruin the guy’s life but what if he were wrong? The correct thing is to follow the law and let the process work. Joe followed the law. That is all anyone can ask.
