MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) Alabama Democrat Doug Jones on Thursday will be officially declared the winner of a U.S. Senate race after a judge rejected Republican Roy Moore's last-ditch effort to stop the certification of Jones' historic upset in a deep-red state.
Montgomery Circuit Judge Johnny Hardwick denied Moore's request for a restraining order to stop Alabama's canvassing board from certifying Jones' victory on Thursday.
Alabama Secretary of State John Merrill said Jones will be certified as the winner of the Dec. 12 election on Thursday afternoon. He will be sworn in on Jan. 3.
A spokesman for Jones earlier called Moore's action a "desperate attempt ... to subvert the will of the people."
"The election is over. It's time to move on," Sam Coleman wrote in an email.
Jones defeated Moore by about 20,000 votes. Moore's campaign was deeply wounded by accusations of sexual misconduct involving teenage girls decades ago. Moore denied the accusations and said he has taken and passed a polygraph test to prove they are false.
Moore's attorney wrote in the wide-ranging complaint that he believed there were irregularities during the election, including that voters may have been brought in from other states. He attached a statement from a poll worker that she had noticed licenses from Georgia and North Carolina as people signed in to vote.
The complaint also noted the higher-than-expected turnout in the race, particularly in Jefferson County, and said Moore's numbers were suspiciously lower than straight-ticket Republican voting in about 20 Jefferson County precincts. The complaint asked for a fraud investigation and eventually a new election.

He campaigned like Hillary. He said he was innocent, so he should have taken the polygraph during the campaign, put forward the evidence his defense attorneys put forth in his defense, and relentlessly proclaimed his innocence instead of hiding a good portion of the time.
If he was guilty, he should have dropped out immediately. If he was falsely accused, then that's a travesty, but it is what it is. Trump was right. Strange would have won.
Alabama Certifies Jones Win, Brushing Aside Challenge From Roy Moore

MONTGOMERY, Ala. Alabama officials on Thursday unhesitatingly pushed aside a legal challenge from Roy S. Moore and certified Doug Jones as the winner of this months Senate election.
The action, during a brief meeting at the State Capitol, was essentially the states final step before the seating of the first Democrat elected to the Senate from Alabama in a quarter century. It was also a swift rejection, by some of the states most powerful Republicans, of Mr. Moores complaint that he was the victim of systematic voter fraud.
Mr. Joness margin of victory was 21,924 votes with more than 1.3 million ballots cast.
He’s past the point of embarrassing himself. Hopefully this will be the last we hear from him (although i sincerely doubt it)
Judge “Johnny” Hardwick
Thank you for posting that.
Yup. The good news is we have a shot at the seat in 2020. Trump should win Alabama, and we can put forth another candidate be it Mo Brookes, Luther Strange, or someone else. Unless Doug Jones does something very endearing, Trump has the real possibility of dragging this candidate across the finish line.
Judge Hardwick is African American and probably an Obama sympathizer.
If this doesn’t get thoroughly investigated in an OPEN COURT OF LAW, it’ll be time for pitch fork, torches and guns !
The cheaters win again.
Se my post above.
He didn’t even take the polygraph until after the election.
You first then? Are you leading the charge or is this just what other people should do?
The radical left and GOPe won this round by teaming up for election fraud which includes all these accusations. I wish the Alabama Secretary of State would file ethics complaints against every Congressman that condemned Roy Moore for illegal interfering with an election. That’s exactly what they were doing.
AFTER the election? Whats the point? If he was innocent, why didn’t he offer to do it before the election when it mattered?
During the Hannity interview he more or less confessed that while in his 30’s he like to date teenage girls.
Judge Moore should focus on suing the Washington Post and subject those who accused him to a lie detector test, and move on from there. The election is over.
