A Pennsylvania couple was instructed to take down a Christmas display featuring a Jesus sign because it was reportedly offensive to their neighbors.
Mark and Lynn Wivell put some Christmas decorations in their front yard on Dec. 16. The centerpiece of their display was a sign with the name of Jesus Christ.
The couple was dumbfounded when they received an email from their homeowners association days after putting up the decorations asking them to remove the display. One neighbor even called it offensive.
We know that Christmas was about the birth of Jesus, Wivell said. I was quite shocked it offended somebody, but I guess in todays world I shouldnt have been.
The homeowners association said that it is not the content of the sign, but rather that the Wivells decorations were not in accordance to the associations rules.
The Wivells have not been formally penalized for the sign, and they plan to keep it up through Jan. 15.

Good for them, and if they continue to object then demand they buy them out at their asking price.
a homeowner’s association has rules against such a display? Really?
Off topic, but a good reason to not buy into those master planned communities which have all these rules and regs.
Another good reason not to live somewhere that has a Home owners assn.
Let’s see, a Christian cannot not put up a “JESUS” sign up at Christmas, but the HOA would be fine and good if some Hispanic guy named Jesus put his name in his from yard?
I would never, ever, move to a community that had a homeowners association. Ive seen this happen way too often with displaying American Flags and religious symbols. And you must sign the agreement when you buy in one.
I would consider moving if I were the homeowner.
19. Display of Christmas and similar holiday decorations, including exterior decorative lights, shall be permitted only from Thanksgiving Day of each year until January 15 of the following year. Display of decorations for other holidays, including, but not limited to, Independence Day and Halloween, shall be permitted for a period beginning ten (10) days prior to the date of the holiday and ending five (5) days after the date of the holiday. No lawn displays or holiday banners are permitted.
They're going after the sign based upon the last part of the rule.

When I was a Realtor, I encouraged my clients to avoid HOAs if at all possible.
Tough way to find out that when you live in a place with a homeowners association they can do what the please. Must read bylaws before going to closing.
“Never buy where an HOA is in effect. “
Nonsense!
It’s often a trade-off-——everyone’s circumstances are different.
.
HOA - they agreed to follow the rules when they bought the house.
Don’t buy a house in a subdivision run by an HOA.
Persecuting Christians is now the norm.
Absolutely!
There is nothing like a HOA to make some people -- people with way too much time on their hands -- to make their inner Nazi come out.
“...the name above all names...” No wonder the world is offended - even names are no longer “equal.” /s
Had the sign said ‘Allah” The neighbors wouldn’t have dared complain to the hoa
I have zero sympathy for anyone who buys into an HOA. They have turned over much of the benefits of home ownership to a self righteous group of managers and will have to live with the prejudices and bigotries of those managers.
