A Pennsylvania couple was instructed to take down a Christmas display featuring a Jesus sign because it was reportedly offensive to their neighbors.
Mark and Lynn Wivell put some Christmas decorations in their front yard on Dec. 16. The centerpiece of their display was a sign with the name of Jesus Christ.
The couple was dumbfounded when they received an email from their homeowners association days after putting up the decorations asking them to remove the display. One neighbor even called it offensive.
We know that Christmas was about the birth of Jesus, Wivell said. I was quite shocked it offended somebody, but I guess in todays world I shouldnt have been.
The homeowners association said that it is not the content of the sign, but rather that the Wivells decorations were not in accordance to the associations rules.
The Wivells have not been formally penalized for the sign, and they plan to keep it up through Jan. 15.

“Never buy where an HOA is in effect. Invariably they are run by agents of the local DNC, natural born gauleiters and apparatchiks. “
HOA’s are run by the homeowners.
They should spell Jesus with a Clark Griswold level of lights on the house...
HOA's are run by the biggest A-holes in the neighborhood.
“Homeowners Associations”.
How can they be outlawed? They are done as private agreements that buyers are agreeing to, and written into the deed restrictions, when the property is sold. Can the law dictate they cannot be part of the private agreements they are founded on?
” to a self righteous group of managers “
Aren’t those managers voted in?
.
Non-HOA:
You buy a place with an HOA you should expect this nonsense.
“HOA’s are run by the biggest A-holes in the neighborhood. “
Not the two that I have lived in.
There are still zoning and sanitation laws. This example is ridiculous.
As though everyone lives in a ghetto that doesn’t live in an HOA.
You might as well make that case for Marxism, which HOA’s are.
NEVER live anywhere where you have a “homeowners association.” Unless you want the minority where you live be able to tell you what you can and can’t do with your property. HOA’s are just another adjunct to Socialism/Marxism.
They need to put the sign on the house or over the garage door.
If you own property your neighbors have no right to tell you what you may do with it. If you give those rights over to an HOA you are giving over much of your own ownership to people that are not you. If I am offended by my neighbor’s yard I have the option of dealing with my neighbor, perhaps offering to pay for changes I deem beneficial. I believe in private property, not in right to some use of a piece of property subject to my neighbors’ approval. If a neighbor can be “offended” by a car up on blocks he can by offended by the tulips in your garden or the statue of Mary on your lawn. You have every right to join an HOA and to tell your neighbors how to act but you are subject to the whims of the HOA also. I would not ever buy property where the deed comes with an HOA nor would I join one.
“...when they received an email from their homeowners association...”
And, that’s all you need to know! Social Engineering Nazis, those organizations. Every. Last. One. Blech!
They are voted in, but they are normally the only people willing to do the job. When someone takes the job and lets his inner Nazi out, it can be ugly. We had a committee (of three) go rogue several years ago, and I had to run in the first competitive HOA election we had run. I won, barely, even after it was clearly a choice between the strictest possible interpretation of HOA terms (14 cases that went to a lawyer in the two previous years) and a lenient interpretation.
Once I won, there were zero cases that went to a lawyer. The guy who broke both legs and didn't take his Christmas lights down in time? No lawyer. The guy who changed the color of his shutters (different shade of dark green) without approval from the diagonal neighbor? Again, no lawyer. Still no trash in the yards, but a lot less nonsense over controlling each other.
Consider yourself fortunate.
I learned the hard way that HOAs are pure evil.
How did you get that photo of my yard? Why didn’t you stop in for a coffee?
“If you own property your neighbors have no right to tell you what you may do with it.”
Dude, the neighbors don’t tell you what you may do with your property. It is an agreement among neighbors.
