It isn’t just the comics. I can’t stand watching a movie or TV show that panders to minorities by inserting a few where it isn’t logical. There are movies with all-black casts when it’s reasonable that everyone in the situation would be black.
Superman lucked out by having an evil white industrialist man for an enemy long before SJWs were a thing outside of Cultural Marxists circles.
The problem is that Marvel stopped effectively enforcing any sort of editorial control a long time ago, and as such writers have just run amok and destroyed their IP. Its been unreadable garbage for years now.
The state of Marvel Comics today is far worse that DC was during is New 52 years, and that was a fustercluck beyond all belief.
***I was a big comic book fan (back when they cost ten cents).***
I remember those days! I liked comic books but never cared for superheros. I still have some COMBAT and THRILLER comics packed away. Earlier days I liked the cartoon and Cisco Kid comics.
The key to the BG remake is, you have to understand its simply a Soap Opera set in space..... All the writers did every week, after the initial story was setup, was to try to shock and awe the audience, no matter how ridiculous the shock they wrote was...
If you watched an episode from the first season and then watched an episode from the last season you would not even recognize them as the same show.
It was basically a dynasty/soap opera set in space. Terrible, by far one of the worst science fiction series made.. Production values were not bad, but as a story, it was drivel.
The DC tv shows have all gone full on pillow biter propaganda, anti trump nonsense.
I watched both series. When I heard that was coming (female starbuck)... I was really concerned. The new replacement was not a SJW and managed to be an interesting version. This is one of the few cases, I ended up ok with the change. In some ways, she was actually more of a radical character than the original starbuck.
Just my opinion :)
I must plead ignorance tot he workings of the industry; I only read comic books decades ago waiting for haircuts in a barber shop, and know little about them. My own children aren’t interested in them at all.
I understand what you are describing, but don’t know much about their target markets and such. I suspect many industries/sectors are simply re-tooling to deal with a customer base that is a lot less white/Anglo; the NFL seems to be taking that approach, and maybe these companies are as well.
I don't think comic sales mean squat to Marvel. It's all about the movies now, the comics are just there because it's expected. But like all SJWs they are embarrassed that all of their primo movie characters are white guys. So they promote a few from the B-list (Black Panther, Falcon, Black Widow) but they really want one of their marquee characters to be "diverse". I can hear them now: "Finally, something useful for the comics division! We can test out new diverse versions of our famous characters! If they work out we'll move them to the big screen and if they don't, well, who cares?"
LOL My daughters are in their 30s so they don’t really play much.
OK; granddaughters?
Nope, demographics of Comic Books hasn’t really changed much.. the pandering is more politically based than demand based.
Editorial Control would be driving shift for demographic needs, that’s not what’s going on with Marvel... they literally loosened up editorial control and let writers do whatever, and of course they started to just ignore decades of cannon and invented craziness that has alienated audiences.
DC has had far more editorial control and you can see pandering attempts to expand demographics there, but NOTHING like what Marvel has been doing... they literally are kind of where DC was during New 52, only worse. They have had things like The Beast from Xmen’s powers are Cat based... not primate/gorilla based... etc etc.. Its a fuster cluck on ever level and utterly unreadable even without all the political pandering.
DC has its share of political pandering too... Batman is almost unreadable and unrecognizable...its now a bat group, including the obligatory female dyke.... Clayface is now a good guy???? Basically as soon as it hits issue 1000 I will be dropping detective. Action Comics with Superman hasn’t been as bad with the pandering, but its definitely not strong... after the new 52 fiasco they now have Luthor a good guy, and even brought back Krypto the dog????
The worst flat out pander though has to be the New Green Lanterns, because you know 3 green lanterns from one planet wasn’t enough, we now have a muslim with anger issues, and a latina women with anxiety issues as the main book lanterns and they are simply rehashing long told storylines.... I will give this book credit that the secondary characters and villains have been interesting (far more interesting than the purely token main characters).... But honestly they could kill this twosome off tomorrow and I wouldn’t bat an eye.
Hal Jordan and the Green Lantern Corps seems to be about the only book that I currently read that seems anything close to “normal” these days. Though it clearly suffers at times from lesser quality writing than others, and some inconsistencies in the characters that editorial control should tighten down on.
I didn’t mean the demographics of comic books changing; I meant the demographics of the public in general. For example, I doubt “Harry Potter” would be as big today as it was originally because there are just less “reading” children in that target demographic today.
I turn the channel or unsubscribe when they start with this leftist crap. I don’t watch much entertainment TV anymore because of that!!!
My post should have read demographics of the comic book audience hasn’t changed much
Hummmmm....This is the point when the old Hemroids come a knocking!!!
I understand; I guess my question is about the absolute number of readers (not the ethnic/gender makeup).
“In Joint BBC/Netflix production “Troy: Fall of a City,” Achilles - described by Homer as having blond hair - will be played by an African” 8 part miniseries - Zeus is also black. Love interest will be a blond caucasian I’m sure.
No, they changed him to “Sgt. Furry”, now he fights in a plush man-sized teddy bear outfit.
“Here was a super hero that really wasnt. He had many personal problems and hang ups.”
Looking at it from a different perspective, a lot of people think this is exactly why Spider-man is one of the best superheroes. He’s was one of the first to actually be a three-dimensional character.
