LIVINGSTON, N.J. Politically speaking, Livingston is not the bluest of the suburbs surrounding New York City. But there are few places where people are feeling any more anxious about the potential impact of the federal tax bill proposed by Republican leaders in Washington.
Theyre crippling us, said Walter Levine, who has lived in this New Jersey community since 1976.
As Mr. Levine sees it, Livingston, a fairly affluent town with a population of about 30,000, could become even less affordable as residents face rising tax bills and falling home values. They could be left with less disposable income to spend in the local stores, setting off a domino effect that could derail the towns economy.

I’m from Jersey, and lived for five years in West Orange (literally next door to Livingston). Short Hills is on the other side, and is even wealthier than Livingston.
All that I can say to these folks is, “Elections have consequences!” You people, by voting in Leftists on the federal, state and local level have made living in your area unaffordable for most, and only affordable for probably half of the folks that DO live there because of the federal tax subsidy going back to your state and local governments. Well, finally the rest of the country got sick and tired of subsidizing YOUR government, and took the goodies away.
Too freaking bad - boo, freaking hoo!!!!! You $hit in your own bed, and now you’re upset that it smells.
60% of municipal cops in NJ make over $100,000 per year. The average school administrator makes $130,000 per year. There are countless municipalities and school districts. NJ residents pay exhorbitant real estate, income and sales taxes, not to mention tolls, DMV fees and all other sorts of taxes and fees. And they get very little in return. Yet all of the blame will go to Trump and the Republicans in Congress for closing a tax loophole.
The Horror . . .
It sounds to me like their problems are more at the state and local level than federal.
Salaries are the least of it. Pensions and health care bennies are the biggest costs. Insane ROI expectations on state pension plans make it worse. This tax plan may actually help state pension plans. If so, public employees and retirees will have another reason to thank Trump.
Paying his fair share sucks.
Not so all the liberals around here, who are always calling for more government spending and abiding higher taxes.
It's clear that the tax bill will lower taxes for people who do not itemize, which is just about everyone who doesn't own their own home; i.e, the not so rich. But my rich neighbors are all of a sudden for fairness; fairness for themselves.
ML/NJ
Yes, very high taxes HERE!
Here in NJ, it's going to buy votes in Newark, Camden, Jersey City, Elizabeth, etc.
Uber Rich often have more than one home. President Trump has a New Jersey home and a New York home, but I doubt he's there 182 days in any year. (Would be a nice "FU-NY" if Trump changed his driver's license and voter registration to Florida in time for 2020!) Many of the Uber Rich don't need to do anything except keep track of the days so they're not legal residents of high tax states.
The average middle class workers in Blue States will benefit will benefit from the tax cut, certainly. It will be a smaller tax cut than the average middle class worker in a fiscally responsible Red State. But most significantly, the average middle class workers in Blue States will also be reminded of how much they are being screwed by their state governments every April now. (Maybe some of them will even stop voting for the Communists.)
I’m in Morris County. My property taxes exceed the cap of deductabilty, but I’m OK with it. I think the increase in national economic activity from this tax plan will benefit other investments. The downside is that this incoming a$$hat, Gov Murphy, has promised higher taxes. The push back from people with high property taxes may compel him to think otherwise. Then again, it’s a Dem legislature, so probably not. The fiscal problems stem from over commitment to state union pensions which Christie tried to address, and is why he became vilified.
A huge number ofmunicipalities, each with a mayor, a police chief, a transportation department, etc. high salaries and benefits. Of course, no corruption/s
You and you alone voted those tax and spend artists in your state, now you get the bill for all the policies you demanded.
Its high time you pay for what you wanted rather than in low or no tax states pick up your bills nationally on more liberal public services you now want for the country.
As for us in flyover country, we demand fiscal sanity and vote our tax and spend libs eventually!
The only way to save New York State is to divide upstate NY from the NY Metro region.
same with california divide la and san fran fropm the rest of the state...they will drown in debt.
Oh, I’m sorry....I guess we shouldn’t have tax cuts, because NJ might get deeper into debt. Dear high tax states, people can move, so why not lower taxes and spending...
High taxes in NJ have nothing to do with Democrats there piling them up the wazoo.
But catastrophe strikes when Republicans cut taxes. Got it.
I live in Middlesex County. I think my taxes may go up but NJ needs to cut their taxes immediately at the state level.
This tax act is definitely punitive to "blue states" because the federal government is no longer going to subsidize the over-taxation going on. This is what is really freaking the liberals out. For years, their state and local taxes were deductible against the federal tax so people didn't feel as much pain.
Well, the curtains have been pulled back.
Another thing is miss about Connecticut, no Alligators in lakes up there! 😀
