In the US location we use the term Air Force Base. Overseas we typically use the term Air Base. We lease the land from the host nation, and even if it’s predominantly US Air Force, there are usually a good number of US Army members assigned there as well. That probably accounts for the helicopters. I am not sure, but maybe the Air Force has some helicopters to search and recovery missions, but I’ve never investigated that.

Thanks for the link:

Here is the BBC summary:

A man has been arrested after apparently trying to drive through a checkpoint at a base used by the US Air Force in Suffolk.

Shots were fired by US personnel before the man was detained at RAF Mildenhall.

He suffered cuts and bruises and is now in the custody of Suffolk Police.

The base was temporarily put into lockdown as police responded to reports of what they called a “significant incident”.

Suffolk police are currently at the scene.
The force advised people to avoid the area for the time being.

If you use the “Noscript” add-on, you can keep scripts from running on their site. That way the content still shows up and the script that detects the adblocker does not work.

And still no ads!

Noscript used to be better but Mozilla broke it with their version 56 undate and on, but it still works and is improving.

RAF Mildenhall belongs to the British Ministry of Defence. Security is provided by the MOD on the civilian side of the base.

The USAF uses the base mainly for military air transport and refueling aircraft and at one time, the SR-71. The flightline, (business side), security is USAF security personnel.

If a car were to run the front gate, the MOD has the responsibility of responding to the situation. USAF SF could assist, but it is only for containment. It is against international agreement for a US service member to harm a citizen of the UK. If the car tried to enter the business side, all bets are off.

On a side note, RAF Mildenhall use to host the Paris Air Show every other year. I stayed at the Bird in Hand hotel, which is right outside the gate, when I first arrived in the UK.

And many years ago I lived at RAF Bruntingthorpe while my dad was serving there. It was about an hour or so from RAF Alconbury and a couple of hours from RAF Lakenheath.

“...they needed the host country to send a helicopter to a US base overseas.”

All military activities at facilities used by US military forces in allied & other host nations are governed by a “status of forces agreement” (SOFA), negotiated with the host nation, determining who is responsible for what: eater supply, electrical power, trash removal, size & type of buildings, who building them, and in this case law enforcement.

Somewhat like inside the United States, there are differing jurisdictions covering different geographical and functional areas. If a given incident falls under the jurisdiction of the host nation, local law enforcement will respond, regardless of the type & capabilities of the US forces stationed there. Likely the case for this incident.

According to the official US DoD website, RAF Mildenhall plays host to KC-135, RC-135, MC-130,and CV-22 aircraft.
