A complete power outage at the nations busiest airport, the Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport, grounded flights Sunday afternoon, threatening to cause a holiday travel nightmare for fliers across the country just over a week before Christmas.
Airport officials said in a news release the power outage has forced the Federal Aviation Administration to suspend outgoing flights and implement a "ground stop" for incoming flights, which "means that flights headed to Atlanta are held on the ground at their departure airport."
International flights will be diverted to land at other airports, U.S. Customs and Border Protection tweeted.
Atlanta Airport tweeted that reports the outage was caused by a construction crew which cut a power line was "NOT confirmed," and added: "We are working with @GeorgiaPower to identify and fix ASAP." The outage happened just after 1 p.m. on Sunday, according to airport officials.

My daughter-in-law’s father is from Atlanta and he says something like that.
Now that we’re semi-retired, we do have the time.
“It’s an inconvenience. Not a calamity.”
True for the most part. But depending on a person’s situation — especially related to health — a calamity is possible.
You are speaking for healthy people, but the last couple of times I helped my late father through airports in a wheelchair, it was quite a great challenge even with things working properly. It would have been a nightmare for all concerned to be stuck with him in this Atlanta airport situation.
There are always exceptions to the rule. Remember, we are all on borrowed time.
You restored my faith in human behavior. I wondered what Uber driver would take someone from Atlanta to B’ham.
I think he/she means something big happens when the stink is about to hit the fan in DC and this week looks to be a huge can of opened worms for those plotting against the President
Dont rule out Atlanta being terrorist related
Not always so simple. I went to Florence Italy and my luggage got held up in Paris for many days. Had it not been for a friend who worked for United, Id probably wouldnt have had my luggage till after my vacay.
I went shopping. But i went there for a wedding and had certain clothes I needed for the many events.
. I worked at an airport and it was sad when someone missed a flight to a cruise where they were supposed to get married. That one was sad.
The outage was caused by an underground substation fire, breaker failure/fire started the fire. Airport has seven feeders which serve the airport but at some point they converge into the same tunnel and they all were either damaged or shut down as part of the recovery and restoration efforts.
This was not a terrorist attack, this is a case of sh*t happens.
Uh.....right
Maybe this was nudged.....
They decided to drive the rest of the trip (Raleigh NC)
************
Not a long drive but where in heck did they get a rental car during all that mess?
You would have thought that ATL would have remembered UA232. Even three systems doesn’t mean double backups if they come ANYWERE close to each other. They have had plenty of time to separate the systems from each other. Guess no one ever remembers Lockheed fixing the L1011. The person who approved this design routing. This is an epic oversight,.... Course it could have been an intentional Achilles heel. Anyone have a spare headgear?
Not sure - haven’t been able to talk to him in detail. They reserved it online, I assume the car rental agencies had power - offsite from the airport?
If you have to be someplace on time, drive.
Or, “If you have time to spare, go by air”.
The *best* terror attacks won’t look like it.
They’ll look just like a $#!+ happens kind of event.
Worst airport in American in my opinion.
Atlanta needs to build a another...for just Southwest.
I vote for Philadelphia as the worst.
Went thorough there for my first, and I vowed last, time in my entire life a few years ago.
