Power outage at Atlanta airport causes 'pandemonium,' grounds flights

A complete power outage at the nation’s busiest airport, the Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport, grounded flights Sunday afternoon, threatening to cause a holiday travel nightmare for fliers across the country just over a week before Christmas.

Airport officials said in a news release the power outage has forced the Federal Aviation Administration to suspend outgoing flights and implement a "ground stop" for incoming flights, which "means that flights headed to Atlanta are held on the ground at their departure airport."

International flights will be diverted to land at other airports, U.S. Customs and Border Protection tweeted.

Atlanta Airport tweeted that reports the outage was caused by a construction crew which cut a power line was "NOT confirmed," and added: "We are working with @GeorgiaPower to identify and fix ASAP." The outage happened just after 1 p.m. on Sunday, according to airport officials.

Thanks. I just read the Georgia power notice. Glad it wasn’t
a major outage impacting the non airport area.

To: Alas Babylon!

Yes! And now I have to get off the thread because my daughter wants me to get onto the airline website to make sure her luggage gets routed back to Birmingham and not out west, which is where it will go if we don’t stop it.
:-)

They should just spend the night in a hotel. I had weather problems flying through Atlanta a few years ago and I actually ended up making a quick reservation and then walking to the nearest hotel (this was pre-Uber) which wasn’t very far away. I actually had a lovely evening and went to a nearby bar that had some great people playing and singing and also a very convivial crowd of stranded guests.

So when life gives you a lemon ....well, you know the rest of it. But don’t make your family drive for hours through the night to pick you up unless its absolutely, positively necessary (like the world is coming to an end and Atlanta is where it’s starting).

My thoughts exactly. My husband was flying into Detroit several years ago for a wedding. The rest of our family and I were already there. It was the huge power outage in August of 2003 I believe. The entire event was quite humorous and we still laugh about it today.

That day I had just finished my shift at the nuclear pharmacy and was half-way home. Suddenly the radio (every station AM & FM), stoplights and every source of electricity was out.

I was sure we had just gotten nuked.

It didn't take but four miles up the road, and everyone was driving like the Keystone Cops. It was mass pandemonium. The water stopped flowing after ~4 hours, but the gas pressure persisted. Luckily, our power came back on after 24 hours but the people across the street (on a different circuit) took 3 days to get power.

It was a serious look into an emergency situation and it wasn't pretty. Don't depend on your neighbors, other drivers or anyone else to do the right thing. I think we would have been stone-age by the end of the week.

I don’t know how many years ago that was for you,
but there are no hotels in walking distance from the Atlanta airport today.

Getting a kick out of many of the responses here.

Folks, it's just a power outage.

You'd think the world was coming to an end because an airport shut down for a few hours!

It's an inconvenience. Not a calamity.

I've been to the Hartsfield airport many times. Yes, it's huge and it's the country's busiest. I know about the trains that run underground between the terminals and all the moving walkways.

I always walk them. I don't think I ever took the underground trains. It might be a mile or a mile and a half between the farthest points. Easy to do. If it was dark, I'd manage. If I had to climb stairs, I'd manage.

To me, this would be an adventure. Something to remember and tell stories about later. Everybody at the airport today should savor the experience. It's part of life. The best memories of life is when things unexpected happens.

I'll never forget that ice storm where I lost power for nearly two weeks in near zero cold. We dressed in layers. We lit the fireplace. We played a lot of cards. Read a lot of books. Played a lot of Monopoly and Yahtzee and Chess. Went outside during the day to get warm because it was colder inside the house than out!

Cold showers!

Now we look back on that time with fond memories.

This would not be happening if they were on solar power. Or wind-power. IN any case, this is all related to global warming, somehow. Or, it could have been Trump trying to shut down CNN but got the airport instead. Anyhow, tax cuts will fix it all. Democrats will be pissed.

Well they are all adults so I am out of the decision making loop. Had I been asked to go get her, I would have suggested she call some friends in Atlanta. She did say there are no rental cars available.

I was asked to try to get the luggage re-routed and had no success. According to the luggage tracker her luggage is still sitting on the plane from Bhm. To call an agent, it is something like a 90 minute hold time. She is going to handle it in the morning.

We have the entire scenario written down somewhere and it reads better than the movie, Planes Trains and Automobiles. It was one comical event after another.

My cousin’s wedding went from a sit down dinner reception to a throw together pizza party at the church. She still is disappointed to this day, but we remind her that everyone had a great time!!

Can’t pump fuel into fuel trucks to re-fuel stranded planes without power.

Days before normal operations restored.

Thanks, they are sitting in the dark at baggage claim right now, waiting on the ride to get there from BHM. Looking at the traffic map around the airport, the power may be restored before they actually get to them.

And when you deplane there you have like 5 minutes to get to your plane that is 3 miles away.
